My new hat (S-18 armet by Oleg Yanchuk)

Post by d-farrell2 »

A couple months ago, I started talking to Oleg (Eisenberg here) about making a reproduction of the Churburg S-18 armet, with a speculative visor. Today, it arrived in the mail. Now, Oleg had been sending me progress pics as he worked, but it was a whole new level of awesome to see the piece in person.

Since this is a pretty rare helmet to see reproduced, I figured I would post some of the pictures that Oleg sent me. Once I get it lined, I'll take some more.

And for those who want to know:
The pictures speak for themselves, really. I found Oleg extremely easy to deal with, his communications were clear and regular. I would gladly do business with him again. As with some of the other Ukrainian armourers - western union or money gram (and their fees and exchange rates) is the only payment option. I mean it when I say that was the *only* downside of this transaction.

The helmet is mild steel, welded (12 ga if I remember right) bowl with 14 ga sides.

Enjoy!

Gorgeous helmet! Ever since I saw his introductory thread Ive been thinking about making a similar helmet for myself to fight in. I love seeing early 15th century stuff...its been neglected for too long.

And I love the visor.

You could also do a version with the rounded/squashed nose....rather like pigface marries a klapvisor.

amazing, such a unique helmet. eisnberg does incredible work.

he's gotta get him self a website lol, and this whole "progress pics" is what i should do for my new custom helmet from maxim. I always enjoy looking at the making of armour from start to finish..

Yeah - I am very happy. Just need to get the liner and camail put in. I will definitely be getting some practice at threading on the camail, since I am going to try and avoid the gap at the front that some folks leave. And I am still deciding if I should line the camail or not. Since it will need to be separate from the helm liner, it will be something easily added.

And I have a ton of progress pics, but I only posted a few - I may go back and post a couple more just for a more full 'start to finish' effect. I think it is good to not just show off the final product, but the process as well. I also think it helps folks understand the amount of work involved.

Nope - I'll be using this for HES/WMA armoured combat work. And, of course, decorating the house :D

Dude that is sweet! Nice hat!
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle

A good choice for respiration, protection and viewability.

Thanks for the extra pics, Oleg.

I'll have to take a pic of it on my armour stand one of these days too.

I can hardly wait to see this helm!

I am also interested in seeing the arms that Jess Wasson is finishing up for you right now. They would go quite well with this hat should you choose to give them away to David.

Jeff has finished the arms, and I'll post here once they arrive.

Yes, they would go very well indeed, but Dave will have to cut them off my cold, dead body!
