ArmourAndCastings update

Post by Velund »

Hello to all

Armourandcastings Update. In this thread I'll be posting the newly made pieces by my workshop since we refresh our range quite often.
Here I'll be telling stories about new items if needed, answer questions on the orders and on our product range - what is what and why humanity has this or that item in its disposal :) .

Tarsoly Pouch fittings.
This kind of belt pouch was quite common among 9-11cc. warriors in East of Europe (Hungary, Rus and around) and Scandinavia. It is often said to have been introduced by the Magyar in whos lands the findings of these pouches are most numerous. Tarsoly Belt Pouch was a rank sign of a warrior as was his belt. The higher the rank of a warrior was the more decorated belt and pouch he had. Tarsoly Pouches might have been decorated with cast mounts or with a single metal plate.
This is how a tarsoly pouch from Birka might have looked like.
Image
If you want to build a tarsoly yourself you may choose fittings you need on our site here: http://armourandcastings.com/index.php? ... t&catId=29.
The number of the fittings may vary - according to your wish. But remember that a rich pouch means a highly-placed individual. You may as well order a ready-made pouch here: http://armourandcastings.com/index.php? ... t&catId=20.

I have had many dealings with Beathan/Velund in the past. His armour is great and, if possible, his castings are even better!

You just read my mind. On average, how much does it cost to ship stuff to the east coast of the U.S. State of Virginia, if it makes much of a difference.

A new belt set! For the belt from the Museum of Clunis, France, late 14c. This is how a noble woman's belt was decorated - with a lot of mounts which might be gilded and enamelled. Pure beauty)!

Are the spoons cast in brass and then silver or gold plated?

Here are some important updates here.
A great 14c. Mideast-Mongol belt set from White River village (Belorechenskaya), Russia, North Caucasus. A very noble man must have been wearing it!

Image

A pin with a shaped head in the Borre style from Scandinavia. 10c.
Image

Nice pair bearhead fasteners from Viking time Scandinavia - a very popular thing, there are loads of them in the Swedish History Museum in Stokholm and in other places.

A couple of new pouch fittings are also added.
More info on the site.

Beautiful work! That belt set is amazing!

This is a cross-enkolpion which is a quite big cross to wear on the neck. It has a hinge and may open to put saint relics or a bit of native soil inside while travelling faraway. These crosses were widespread over the orthodox world and beyond since 10c.

Hi I just received an order of the Museum of Clunis belt pieces as above. I have a question about them. Most of them have the narrow pins that get bent over. I'm OK with that. But some of the enamelled pieces have a single thick shaft in the centre, that looks like it needs to be peened over like a rivet. I am worried that the impact will damage the enamel. Should I be worried?

When I've attached pewter belt pieces I've put a piece of cardboard between the belt mount and my anvil, while peening over the shank. Is that enough? My other thought was perhaps I could cut the shank down the centre with a jewellers saw and then split it. Any ideas/pointers?

Thanks
Vitale

Yes, the thick pins on some pieces are to be riveted. In case with enamelled mounts you should be careful indeed not to damage the enamel. The best way to do that is to rivet these mounts on a small anvil or a metal plate so that the enamel would not (or minimally) contact with the anvil. Or just riveting a piece on the edge of anvil/metal plate pressing only the non eamelled surface of the mount to the base. To simplify the process of riveting you may file of grind the top of pins to be riveted flat - it really makes the process easier and quicker. To have a cardbord or a piece of leather under mounts while riveting is a good idea.
And, I would not advice you to bend the pins apart sawing them in two - they may break cause the flexibility of the brass alloy may be different. The best way is to just carefully rivet the flat topped pins putting a washer on each.
If you come across more troubles with attaching mounts - write on e-mail we'll try to handle it in a way.

I have been happy with all the castings I have gotten from A&C.

The one time I was mildly unhappy with something (some leather blanks for making belts from), they immediately asked how they could rectify the situation and sent me some other castings right away.

I have since personally ordered from the twice more and referred them to many people. Very good product at a great price and excellent customer service.

Oh, it is really a nice tarsoly! I believe it is better in reality as very often photographing steals much of the beauty of leather things. Congrats and thanks for good words.
Well, we have at last returned from our summer travels and will soon reply to all the letters we've recieved. Some new items will be presented as well.

This set was found in a rich 14c. burial of a noble horseman near the village of Kovaliovka in the south of Ukraine (western borderof the Golden Horde). The set consists of one square buckle, one strapend, 6 shaped mounts and 4 round pieces with loops to hang sabre or other things on. The style of the set is typical for the period Mongol-Tatar art but in some details was evidently influenced by the traditions of Chinese (Jurchen) art. The set presented here is enlarged (x1.5 bigger) as compared to the original one.
