14 cent. sword belts
Greetings all. I am making a scabbard and belt for a friend and need any documentation, pics, carvings etc that shows the rigging for a 14th/15th century harness. I have seen the line drawing design for scabbard/belt making thats been floating around here but I am not sure if that is an earlier period rig or if it would be applicable for 14th cent.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Right now I'm starting to make several tooled leather belts. some just waist belts some sword/dagger belts. I got my tooling designs from an effigy book I own. It has line drawings of many of the 14th century knightly effigies, and has great detail. If I had it at my house right now I'd give you the name of it. Probably next week sometime.
like Murdock said as well- look at Gothic eye, and Gason Phoebus. they have a lot of belts.
Hope this helps,
Aaron

Go to the link in the initial post, it has detailed close-ups of the effigy, including front and side views of the plaque belt. For instancegreenshield wrote:No real help in the Whats This dude Wearing section. Just alot of mumbo jumbo about a muscled breast plate and a pommel shot, thats about it.

I can't recall if folks have explored this option here yet or not, but in puttering through Dress Accessories I found this:
The text that accompanies it speaks of another quite similar metal find (which I didn't find the picture of yet; there is, however, a color photo of the subject of this redrawing in the color plates section) and the authors state, "The tab was probably to hold a sword..."
So there's one viable theory -- that the reason we're not seeing the complicated scabbard mounts is because there was a fashion to forgo them for a period of time. Perhaps scabbards were bound through a simple hole in a piece of metal belt furniture...? We know that purses were hung in a similar way (among others), so would it work for the heavy object like a sword? I don't know.
Just wanted to throw it out there for possible discussion.

LOL! Actually the 14th century scabbard I'm making is for Sir Elisar.
However, I did have the pleasure of making our newest knight's (Sir Ryan) scabbard. Funny how things turn out. BTW here is a pic for those interested in seeingthe work.
BTW, how are things up there in Calontir?? Will we be seeing you at GW??
