Movies I Shouldn't Watch?

Post by Konstantin the Red »

Oh, what the heck... let's see what tops other people's laughability list.

Trying to find really pure tries at getting Thomas Malory right is an awful job. First Knight was sort of interesting, once, but I think I'd like my Malory purer rather than with Star Trek: TNG oufits.

I loved Merlin.

And I like the direction they went with Excalibur.

"Historical" Movies that shouldn't be watched, or ever refered to for history, costume, etc.

BRAVEHEART
APOCALYPTO
THE MESSANGER
PATHFINDER

Those are my list of evil. I am of the opinion that the producers and costume designers for those movies should never again be allowed near any historical or historical fiction movie, upon pain of death, or at a minimum, pain of blinding, and mutilation.

13th warrior was a masterpiece of historical accuracy and costumry compared to my list, but I can always add it.

King Arthur(2004) Clive Owen, Keira Knightley

Saxons with crossbows, Picts with trebuchets, and armor & weapons that range from hodge-podge to absolute fantasy.

It started with a cool idea, depicting the possible Roman/Briton origins of the Arthurian legend, but it ended as a historical/cultural trainwreck.

As a general rule avoid using medieval movies as costume references.
But you should definitely watch Braveheart and the Messenger. I would actually have both of those on my must watch medieval movie list.

But yes First Knight really should be sent to the Hague for crimes against humanity.

First Knight is my inspiration! I watched that film when I was younger, and even now, as I'm in the middle of my college degree in history and saving every penny I can for a suit of armour... I can't WAIT to make a commission with Ugo for one of those sick close helms they wore, and I'm having Chris Gilman make the matching studded, blue vest! I'm so excited!

Your gonna be very disapointed. I wouldn't make that for you even if you were making "Second Knight"

You will have to hire the finest armourer in the world to make that for you...Blankenshield,...

....oh, no, ah....Ernst the plattener....er ah no,

Oh that's right, it's on his web site ..."Terry English is acknowledged as the finest armourer in the world"

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but I watched this movie last week about the Norse discovery of America...Done by some guy named Troy Stone...All the dialog was in old Norse...Absolutely horrible...It runs a REALY close second to First Knight in my all time "I wanna kill someone for even talking about it in my presence" list....

I am very sorry for Terry that he took that commission for First Knight. Are we sure that it wasn't a case of short straw being drawn on his part? Then again, maybe what the customer wants, the customer gets, and it's a case of manufacturer loyalty to the customer.

Yes, as a rousing Adventure tale based on Burne Hogarth's comic strip, ...."Prince Valiant" was great. I still love watching it. But it still perpetuated some stereotypes that you shouldn't base actual "historical" usage on.

"The Longships", I mean......."really". If you ever read Bergstrom's book, you know it could have been done so much better....and it still could have kept some of Bergstrom's humor. When I first saw the trailers, I expected something better only to be disappointed when I first saw it in the theater.

But watch the early "Viking Village" scenes to catch many props formally used in Kirk Douglas' "The Vikings".

To be fair, if you look at the comic book Pathfinder was made from, it was not trying to be historical. Or rather, it wasn't trying to be "realistic" -- the comic is a very abstract dreamscape environment.
If the movie designers F-ed up, it was in making the movie too "real" looking --
the Vikings are supposed to be massive nightmarish demons

That is not possible. A Knights Tale is easily the most brilliant medieval movie made by an American.

I Loved "A Knight's Tale" when I first saw it.. thought it was a great movie.. That was a bit BEFORE i actually had any interest in researching or making any armor myself...

I guess i was shocked, amazed and ashamed of myself once i actually read something.. like when the black prince lived..... and what armor he was wearing..... but i still love that movie. Peasants singing Queen rocks
