That's awful! I was a little surprised that what little Italian I know was essentially useless in that part of Italy. People were polite to us at least despite fumbling through in German. Don't schools teach in Italian throughout Italy? It would seem that standardizing the language would be good for the country, the economy, etc. and Italian is the obvious choice.

I still have cold sweat nightmares about going to school.... something like my boss calling me and telling me that my grad school got a message from my undergrad school, who got a letter from my high school, telling them there was an error in my records and I still need to test on Lineal Algebra and Calculus I, otherwise my high school diploma and all afterwards are invalid.... Here is where I wake up with cold sweat and shivering in terror...
