looking to commision a Great bascinet

I am looking to start jousting and I need a new Helm. I want a great bascinet with eyeslots less than an inch wide. I would like it in 12 or 14 g stainless. I would like to stay under 500 dollars can anyone make such a thing?

Those are nice but several hundred dollars more than my budget and I dont believe they are stainless.

I want to take my combat displays to a new level and I need a new Harness. I want a full garniture based on the suit by Lorenz Helmschmied of Augsburg for Archduke Sigismund of Tyrol in 1485 with cast gold edges. I would like it in proper done hardened and tempered spring steel. I would like to stay under 5000 dollars can anyone make such a thing?

Not gonna happen..

Even if you can find someone who will make you a grand bascinet for this amount of money, it's not going to be a whole lot of quality. For jousting you want quality armour.
Because, it's only your head, what's the worst that could possibly happen?? My advice is to save your money and wait until you can spend more, you'll be a happier camper later on.
That's the most valuable (and expensive) lesson I've learned over the years.

Maxim does work in stainless. All you need to do is ask. His Grand Bacient in stainless I would guess to be over 1000 bucks and Maxim's prices are not high.

Good luck finding a Grand Bascient for around $500 in stainless. When you find one, let me know, at that price, even I'll pick one up.

Kaos gave good advice, I'd wait a bit and save more money. It may take up to a year to get one made anyway from the time you order. That would give you more time to save a bit more.

If you want a good Great Bascinet in stainless steel for jousting, it will cost more than $ 500.

I has make the helmets and gladly would be done another one in stainless steel. I can offer several options at different costs and the level of protection. If you are interested, write me.

Kaos/Ben is right. $500 is chicken feed for any Great Bascinet you want to put on your head.

I coached a friend of mine with the photos and other material needed to have a custom one done by Steel Mastery. They quoted around $500-600 plus shipping from Ukraine. It took a really long time (they were going through they're "phase" then :roll:

) and the resulting helm needed $250 worth of work for us to get it even wearable. After that it still doesn't really work, and it has everything to do with the thing being built completely wrong from the start.

Trust me, having jousted in a GB for several years now, and having built a couple of GB's recently for jousters, they're finicky helmets. They need to be built right to work right. To be built right they need to be built by somebody who's made them before, otherwise they just don't understand the geometry and function. If you try to "cheap out", you'll just waste your money and end up with a helmet you won't be able to use.

Follow Ben's advise, save your money until you can afford a decent armourer to make one for you. Either that or go for a less involved and therefore less expensive helmet.

Then again, just my opinion.

My helm was a stroke of luck. Seeing the one Lloyd had gotten, I wanted one just like it. It was made by Steel Mastery, but no one at Steel Mastery would tell me who exactly made it, or if they could make another one. I saw the look and finish of the other helms they had made and was not impressed as they were not as nice, nor as correct as the one Lloyd had gotten.

Then, one day Lloyd put his up for sale when he retired. Within 90 seconds I had purchased it. It is a one of a kind score if you ask me for an off the rack purchase. It fits, it works and is perfect for me.

As for regular helms, I've been though several looking for one that is "fit". Jeff is spot on, save your money and go with a good armorer. More so go with one who has mounted experience and has tilted. They know what you need, and what works.

I got lucky getting Lloyds helm, and having it be a perfect fit. But, that does not happen often.

I just posted it to illustrate that you can't buy a Ferrari for Lada prices. If you put dedication in it, it's really easy to save up a considerable amount in a year time.
Unfortunately, most want instant gratification which is a near impossible thing in custom armour. Just plan carefully and be patient. In the end this is the fastest and the most rewarding method to buy great armour.

Hi Gideon,

Leo bought that helm off of me when I hung up my spurs. It was made for me by Steel Mastery (and was probably one of the best helms that I ever owned or jousted in). It ran me about $800 new, and that was in 2007.

Just remember, you want to keep your occulars (eye openings) under 1/2" with a 1/4" being pretty much the standard and you do not want breathe holes on the left side of the visor (could allow in pesky splinters that could kill you :wink:

). That is a very nice helm and I may be talking with Hammerbreaker if I get the okay to go back into jousting.

When you first posted Harley for sale, I looked at the pic and said "Awe..cute pony." Then I read the description of his size and I was like "Crap. He's built like a rhino!"

How about rent to own? Wouldn't it would be cool to say "Yep. I own a horse. I have guy that takes care of it for me. It's only $100/mo....(plus $300/mo. to feed. And $200 for the grooming/upkeep/shoeing....etc.)"

I worked for a guy that raced horses, and it was about $900-$1,200 a month to upkeep them. :shock:

We have six horses right now you don't want to know how much it costs to keep them fed, but it isn't as much as a race horse and we have an in house farrier and groomer.

Jolly Knight has a nice looking Great Bascinet on his Xmas sale for $500 (including the shipping) might give him a yell. Just make sure that you get a visor latch (on the right side of the helm) that is pretty sturdy.
