Hey,
We (the Salinas Swordsman) are going to have our annual tournament on June 23-24, 2001 in Salinas, CA, a couple hours south of San Francisco. If anyone is interested on coming out to watch us fight, you’re more than welcome to. There will be food, drinks, and plenty of camping space for a tent. Here’s the outline of events:
June 23 (Saturday)
Tournament starts around noon. Details of tournament itself are outlined here and the rules can be found here. After the tournament, which we expect to last 5-6 hours, we will have a melee (yippee!!!) and then a feast. After the feasting, we put the kiddies to bed and break out the drinking mugs and keg tap. There’s music, a modest bonfire, and plenty of drinks and happy souls to be around. That goes on until…well…until you drag yourself to your tent and pass out.
June 24 (Sunday)
We crawl, squinty-eyed, from our tents and huddle around the smoldering fire while munching on pastries and chiding ourselves for drinking too much and then usually eat some spicy sausages to wake us up. Around 11 or 12, we have the archery, knife throwing, and spear throwing contests for which prizes are awarded. After that, we have our grudge matches (rules above) and then another melee. We expect the day’s events to conclude around 5-7 p.m.
For those that don’t know, we’re the guys who use axe handles and shovel handles instead of rattan. It can be quite a bit more violent than SCA fights in that we allow full body targeting, grappling, punching, kicking, and just shrug off headshots. Points are scored by hitting your opponent in the side or front of the neck with your stick. 3 points wins a match in the tournament. Grudge matches are 3 minutes long with virtually no rules; no points requirements, no need to protect your neck, no mercy (hehe).
The price is, well, free to all those interested in coming out and having a good time. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.
