Snowpocolypse heavy practice

Post by Tascius »

In Frederick MD (Northern Atlantia) we have a heavy practice every Friday night. With all the looming snow it was of course accepted that the practice would be canceled. Nada! Some 10-15 people show up with gear, bedrolls, beer and food and proceed to get snowed in. This morning, at it again.

Hardcore dude. Mad props or whatever the younger crowd would say. You have my respect. I'm comfortably snowed in and working on cleaning the basement so I can do armor repair projects.

That's great! I, unfortunately, have been getting my upper body workout in the far more mundane pursuit of clearing the driveway. (These are the times that having a 200' long gravel drive really sucks.)

And to think.....they had enough sense to cancel Ice Castles in Black Diamond (Central West Atlantia) last weekend. University this weekend.

I truly believe that things like this are the SCA's proudest moments.

We had a cold snap in Kansas a month ago (between +20 and -10F). It made me think about cold weather kits, like fur-lined Mongol hats and such. If any of your group goes that way I'll bet they're glad for it now.

Also a good historical experience since war wasn't always waged when it was sunny and warm.

Just to be clear I was not at the practice. I'm shoveling snow. Could not in clean conscience allow myself to get snowed in while the rest of the family was at home. Posted the pics cus I love these guys for doing this.

Just got this word, they are still snowed in but at the park next door they got into a snowball fight involving some 150 people. (Organized online) Andrew, one of the fighters from the prior photos (on the left hip deep in the snow) organized a bunch of the kids. They made a shield wall using sleds and advanced on the snow ball foe in formation!. If pictures show up I will be sure to post them.

One of the guys at that practice was up here doing armour work. Got a kick out of the fact that the second pic consists of no leg armor and they are on their knees to give the effect of "ass deep" snow....

We received a total of 27" of snow so they are definitely on their knees. I found the photo on a Facebook update. Still it took a lot for this practice to happen. I see 8 fighters in armor fighting on a day everything shut down..

Ohh don't get me wrong. The fact they were fighting in that crap is way cool... I was commenting on the humor that went with it...

Practice in the snow, it's good for your footwork, really it is!

This is a couple of years back in Seashire (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

Thanks Giraut, just forwarded that to the fighters in the picture. Would not be suprised to find it framed on a wall in the near future.
