East vs Atlantia Practice

Post by Tascius »

We are formally a GO for another East vs. Atlantia SCA heavy fighter practice.

It will be held at the:

Smyrna Ambulance Company/American Legion-
107 W. Glenwood Ave
Smyrna, DE

Feb. 28 (Sunday) at noon (fighting till 6pm)

The location has an indoor fighting area the size of a small school gymnasium.

If the weather allows there is plenty of space outside. This is the third practice of this type. The other two practices were very successful with some 40 to 50 fighters in armor.

All are welcome and there are no fees. No fuss no muss, what more could you want?

see map below-

These are always great practices. Unfortunately my household will be at Winter War that weekend in upstate NY. I look forward to the next one!

If Winter War gets snow; and it looks like there will be some between myself and the event, I will likely redirect our efforts to the practice.

I really want to go to Winter War but the 8 hour drive would likely be miserable when compounded with snow.

The snow free hour drive to Delaware is starting to look attractive....

No.

I'm looking forward to snow everywhere BUT on the road to this practice. The roads will be all completely clear and full of wildflowers in bloom going to the fighter practice, and 9 feet of snow if you are going elsewhere. ;)

And I'm looking at my biggest attendance in 13 years, with 6 Royals from two Kingdoms.

And I'm sick of snow...

I will be bringing rattan, spears and some other gear down with me. Give me a yell if anyone wants me to bring something specific.

You're fast!

OK, I will herby release all the routes going north to be clear of snow, as per my whim, as the unofficial village idiot of the Armour Archive, with all the authority that entails.

Watching the weather patterns for this weekend. So far no snow forecast for Smyrna DE, temperatures in the low 40s during the day. Some snow is expected this Thursday.

Very light snow on the Eastern Shore. Didn't even stick to the ground and melted on the windshield.

Were at the Taco Bell 4 blocks away. It's 11:30 AM.

My son shot 300+ pictures, and from a quick review here are "the best".

We started the drive a bit late, but still got there at 11:45 AM and the place was already packed!! SCA time is not always a constant.

Nick and I took a drive over the bridge, in a way going on the mythic quest over the water on the rainbow bridge to vallahalla, with a stop at Taco Bell.

Outside it was wonderful and just cool enough for fun. Inside I sweated buckets. Outside I was in bliss.

There was a lady fighter from Galacia who fought with greatsword. She reminded me of Mary Lou Retton -- spunky and bounced back quickly and enjoyed every event.

The outdoor melees were great fun, and Duke Andre took time to make sure we didn't run out into traffic. Really, sometimes it was close. And in the East if you are hit by a car, it's called excessive, mostly.

And a young lady fighter had wonderful gauntlets as shown. Beautiful work.

With respect,

One fellow seemed to fight with "thumb in" like I do with polearm, and we had a great time. But then I noticed that his polearm (split rattan) had broomed out badly. He hit me a couple of times and it was "mushy". So I dropped my guard while pressing him hard, and he had a clear shot to my helm and it was mushy.

We played for a bit with my matched pollaxes (very solid), and had a great time.

The mushy polearm reminded me of the comments I've seen on the Archive. NO fighter could have thrown a good blow with that weapon, and it was difficult to understand that until he hit me.

With thanks,

The practice was very relaxing and a lot of fun. Some kits were really high end. Some were SCA casual. And nobody really cared one way or another. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends. And I had a GREAT time.

My only complaint is that I didn't make sure my son had enough food he liked. I brought cashews, bannanas, apples, apple cider...but he was hungry at 3PM and we had to go.

I'd paid him $20 to take photos, and he used part of his $20 to take his old dad out to lunch at Taco Bell. That was a lot of fun. Nick is a very good son and I love him. He suprises me everyday.

My Clovenshield colors were garish, but easily seen at long range...unless I was hid in a Christmas tree farm. ;)

The young fellow I'm fighting has a great future. Wonderfully powerful leg shot. Very impressive.

He's also HALF my age! He's 20 years old. And oddly enough, once the helmets are on, we're all fighters regardless of age or gender. I didn't really think about it until now.

So, after Nick treated me to dinner at Taco Bell (thank you son!!), we rode off into the sunset, back over the bridge to "Midguard".

Nick's a good kid, and I think he'll put me in a good rest home someday instead of "Our Lady of Perpetual Punishment for Putrid Parents".

Great fun! Enjoied the dance.

So, Aaron, what were you wearing? What were you fighting. I was the guy in the tan tunic (it covers up a great deal of sins) and carried either the red round shield or the red tear-drop.
