I am hardly an expert, Vitus, but I know where to look. R.I. Page's book (cleverly entitled "Runes") is probably your best bet. What are you trying to do?

Do you want english words written with runes or do you want something translated into Old Norse in runes?

just do a search, there are a few sites that do a side by side. makes it easy. if you cant figure it out i will do it for you.

I have had two grad-level classes on Old English and can translate a passage from ME to OE and then into Runes. It could be a week or longer before I could give you a really accurate translation.

If you want a cheap, easy cheat you can download the futhark font.

Runic alphabet was not a generic thing. You also need to know which period and which area.

E.g. Vikings did not use the so-called Elder Futhark but a younger 16-character version. And even then they had a couple of variations plus later additions.

If you use English or especially OE I would suggest using Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet, which has 26-33 characters depending on the source. Afaik OLd English was written with these runes.

The Anglo-Saxon futhark is later than the viking age.

How so? I believe they were already in use much earlier and enjoyed a relatively long lifespan.

E.g. the so-called Franks casket (currently in British Museum) is from 8th century and it has Old English in Anglo Saxon runes.

You may be right, I'll have to look into it some more. I was under the impression that the AS futhark post-dated the VA in quite a few of its unique runes. I may be misremembering.

They were used to write Old English, which was spoken c. 5th to 11th c.
