my new axe, almost finished (imgs attached)

Post by dukelogan »

so ive been working on my new axe for those pole weapon fights that i sometimes are forced into because of some odd monkeying around with a tourney. pretty pleased overall. the haft started out as 3.75" rattan that i worked down to an octangle shape, stained, burned some runes, and then glued the head which is the same head i made about 6 years ago out of leather with the required 1/2" foam edge.

i will sand the duct tape a little on the sides to get rid of the lines (it also isnt nearly as shiney as the flash makes it look). its 49" long and the $20 bills are there for scale (since a US bill is 6" long i figured that would help).

none of my guys will let me hit them with it though......

hey there, soon to be, boss man!

sure axes can have butt spikes. are they not allowed in trimaris or something? society weapons standards allow head spikes, butt spikes, and the axe head for attack.

logan

If you do a thought experiment on butt spike for axes as smashy metal cap things instead and effectiveness against humans... it still works well, in my head at least.

I figure a 4lb hammer blow to the face or shoulder is severely un-fun., armour or not.

Plus you never want to motivate someone to make one of those and power test it, even SCA legal-wise, on you in a "for real' way.

i doubt that there were axes with spiked ends, ever. i also do not think that you could end a fight with one, spiked or not, no matter where you struck someone (save the odd chance of hitting them in the throat and bleeding them out, the inside of the arm or leg, etc). however, our rules allow for butt spikes to be used and until that silliness is done away with i promise to use mine with great intent should i need to.

Duke Logan,

Now I'm curious on the axe with spiked ends issue...it _seems_ that, in Eric Jager's book on the late 14th century judicial duel between Carrouges and LeGris, the large one-hand axe each were equipped with as one of their weapons may have had a spike on both ends..I'll try and find the book and check that this weekend.

Skilled work with your axe!

I love the handle.

When are you moving? I just had surgery yesterday, but I'm excited about having you down here to beat on me some more. ;-)

Btw, the Dreher Park practices are likely moving to Saturday.
