Just got it yesterday from Franklin:

I think the most common way would be to run a strap from one of the shoulders to the opposite side torso, then do the same on the other shoulder. This would make an X across your back. If you do this, be sure to attach a short strap and buckle to the top of the shoulder, then make the strap coming off the opposite torso able to be strapped into this buckle (making it adjustable).

You would normally leave it buckled and put it on by raising it above your head, putting your arms through the side holes (made by the crossing straps), then slip it down and your head in the top hole made by the straps.

Hope this helps! I have no idea of a "historical way."

I think thats the way Ill go, although Ive played around with the idea of incorporating my kidney belt right onto the bp... then again I am a totaly frackin newbie and would probably ruin both in trying!
