The Midrealm Royal Navy

TRMs declared upon acending the throne on May the 1st that the Rapier fighters are now members of the Royal Navy of the Inland Seas, by letters of Mark.

A Comodore will be named at Baron Wars this weekend.

A clarification, if you please:

All good King's men who sail, in fealty, under the ensign of the Middle Kingdom shall be, for the duration of Our reign, be organized and otherwise conscripted as the Midrealm Royal Navy. Any who remain outside of fealty, or otherwise remain beyond the reach of the Crown, may act for the express benefit of the Midrealm, per the conditions detailed within the Letter of Mark read aloud during Our morning Court upon the day of Our Coronation. Said Letter of Mark, shall remain securely in the possession of the Queen's Rapier Champion as Our personal representative in the Midrealm Royal Navy.

The Commodore of the Midrealm Royal Navy will indeed be named forthwith at Baron Wars.

What is the motivation behind the creation of a Royal Navy? Is this so more people can be swashbucklers?

Since letters of mark are mentioned ...oh dear...this can only be a prelude to the taking of unescorted prizes.

Armored combat represents the "army". Where there is a land battle to be fought, a King sends his army to fight it. King's don't have "heavy" armies and "light" armies, they have Their Army! Creating a Royal Navy places a different emphasis on rapier combat by providing them goals and responsibilities that are not superfluous with armored combat. Too often, rapier is given "second class" status behind armored combat. By establishing a new focus, which is disparate from the focus of armored combat, rapier combat is lifted above "civilian personal defense" which would seem to be at odds with the idea of rapier combat en masse (lest there be street brawling).

This also is intended to add a new angle of fun to Our game. Many of those who chose later period personas and/or participate in rapier combat already have an interest in this aspect of history - they now have an outlet with the full support of the Crown.

Finally, I have a certain distain for the term "rapier community". Royal Navy sounds so much better.

I suppose if people are going to dress like post-period pirates then it is easier to go with the flow then to buck the system.

But the comparison to horseless knights was a pretty apt comparison.

If any of these Midrealm swashbucklers want to get their sea legs, I'm sure some of the ships in ASTA will accomodate them.

Depends entirely on the letters of mark that the pirates may be carying. Carying the right letter and they are 'privateers' instead... of course they could be arrested for evading conscription but I have no idea if evading conscription is a shooting, hanging or walking the plank offense.

Should Atlantia reform the Atlantian Navy? Heck, were we ever deformed officially?

One man's pirate is another's privateer, whether he bears a letter of marque and reprisal or not.

Follow the money! Cui bono? Letters of Marque were issued by many governments, some more legitimate than others. For instance, is the Letter of Marque from rebelious English colonies in North America sufficient to keep you from being hung as a pirate? Hah! You are obvious both a traitor to the crown AND a pirate!

(I will note that Captain Kidd's Letter of Marque was found filed away in London several hundred years after he was hanged for piracy. Funny how key pieces of evidence get misplaced when grand schemes misfire!)
