Authorization at Pennsic - Is it Possible?

Post by Gerhard von Liebau »

Hey folks,

I've been working frantically on my armor all summer and won't have it ready until the week of Pennsic. The official website states that I need to be authorized at least a week prior to the event... I've been authorized before but it was several years back and I no longer have any proof of authorization, but I'm confident that I have the basics of combat and safety down to get re-authorized without any trouble.

Obviously, my problem is that my first opportunity to get re-authorized will be at the event itself. Is this impossible? With all the work I've put into my armor and the cross-country trip that it'll turn out to be, I do hope there is some kind of other option for me... Thanks for any input!

your best bet is to contact your minister of the lists and get a copy of your old card there if it's still good. Not much chance of authorizing at pennsic I'm afraid. one if the involved kingdom earl marshals on here may have more help....

I would borrow someones armor and get to a local event or to a fighter practice if authorizations are allowed out there....pennsic has only allowed additional weapon forms authorizing in the past.

I would hunt down a local marshal and do a reautherization it may be difficult to document with resources available on the listfield at Pennsic even if arangemtns have been made with a marshal from your kingdome.

Personaly I would try to get the paperwork figured out prior to the deadline.
Autherizing or reautherizing in barrowed gear will make things a lot easier.

According to both Aethelmearc and Pennsic policy....Fighters must have a primary authorization by July 24th (the weekend before the beginning of Land-grab weekend). Secondary authorizations must occur by August 9.

Theres really no other way around this but to get it done beforehand.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input, guys. I was figuring it'd be something along those lines - I just wasn't sure how strict the setup would be. Oh, well! I'm going to try to get to my local practice next week and see what I can do about authorization and all that jazz. Cheers!

Way back when I was but a whippersnapper, coming on over 20 years ago, I knew certain people that would help other people at Pennsic with authorization cards that may or may not have been "on the level."

Also certain ill-advised youngsters that I had occasion to know had "slipped" onto the field. Were there any questions about authorizations these same folk would melt off into the crowds.

Neither of these are solutions that I would recommend however.

Borrowing a suit of loaner armor and getting authorized before the deadline would be your best bet.

Hey Chris,

I can't say for sure that I ever got an official authorization beyond the local marshal telling me so - I quit the area too soon afterwards, methinks. It was in Caid in 2006 or so as a minor with parent's permission.

I'm actually going to my local baronial practice in a couple of hours with need for a bit of loaner gear, but I've got most of the bases covered. I'll be attending the next two weeks to make sure that I get things done. Thanks for the help, folks, and for the push in the right direction - I was slouching about getting in contact with the locals for practice times.

Take a look here and see if you find your name in the excel file.

http://marshal.sca-caid.org/db.php

If you do, you should be able to get a new card, authorizations are usually good for 4 years so you are close to that edge having authorized in '06. But, since it sounds like you might not have done any paperwork, you authorization was never fully processed. I'm not familiar with how Caid conducts their paperwork.

Best of luck and hopefully we will see you on the fields of pennsic in a few weeks.

Caid's auths expire every 4 years, on your birthday. If you are an active fighter, the re-auth is a formality, but if you haven't been fighting enough to be a relatively known quantity, you'll have to do a full authorization.

This will consist of a test of the rules, followed by a sparring bout in the forms you wish to auth in.
