Painting grilles to make them "Disappear"

Painting grilles to make them "Disappear"

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

I was looking at Lui Bolin's art

And I was wondering if with a decent photo of the wearer, the same could not be done for this...

Has anyone tried?

Yes, painting/covering bar grills has been done for quite some time.

Some use black athletic tape, others flat black primer. The effect significantly reduces the appearance of SCA bar grills.

I carry a black Sharpie Marker in my repair kit to touch mine up at Pennsic.

For some, it also helps with "glare" off the bars.

See I find the black grills stick out better in person than the steel ones. *shrugs* The light colored ones tend to fade away for me. The black really pops.

It might be a matter of distance. Close up, yeah, they would contrast a lot. Get outside of 10 feet, they start to vanish for most folks.

It is used a lot in theater and photos - though digital photos might be less "blind" to it.

I find that the less prominent the grille is to begin with, the more likely blackening the bars is to make it disappear. Windrose's black grilles, attached to the outside of shiny stainless helms, draw some attention to themselves, although it's still less than a shiny stainless grille would draw. I painted the bars of my helm flat black, and really liked the effect. At the time the attached picture was taken, the paint was stripped of the bottom bar, because it was time to repaint the bars after about 4 years.

use a 14g perforated steel plate instead of a grill for the face and paint a screaming berzerker face on it.

A few of the local use almond or Desert sand color paint on the bar grills.

A lot of Lui Bolin's art is dependant on a fixed perspective so it be comes more difficult to hide when viewed in profile.

I find a bit of a mat or satin finish helps cut glair paticularly at Pennsic.

If you don't like bars, why use them? There are plenty of alternatives.

Because a bargrill is less of an anachronism than a solid face plate would be for some personas

Wait... what?

So a guy in said period who just made a helm decides he wants to add some face protection. Instead of making a face plate out of the exact same sheet material he just made the helm from, he decided to manufacture much more difficult bars?

That makes no logical sense even from an anachronistic stance. Essentially you are saying that because my Landsknect squire cant find evidence for a steam powered catapult in his period, he gets to use an ICBM.

I hate this argument when its used. Once I'm Society Earl Marshal and ban bargrills for any who cant directly document them it will finally be over!

I can't direct document a full plate face or sides for that matter. Or legs! Not even arms really.

So I don't get to fight anymore?

A bar grill might suck, but it gives the idea of nothing there better than a solid plate.

If I can't document either, which should I use?

I'd personally say bar grill. It simulates an open face while meeting our armor/safety standards.

Yeah, from that angle, the bars in the oculars do look droopy and downcast.

It looks much less obtrusive then a glinting stainless steel grill.
