Evidence for this helm?

Post by Dierick »

I'm not going to provide any pictures or artwork so as not to sway thoughts on this. I'm just going to give the description and see if anyone has any knowledge on the subject so that I can do some deduction on my own.

At any point in european history, 14th century onwards, is there any evidence for a helm similar to a great bascinet or close helm with a partial neck, used in conjunction with a gorget that fits up inside of the helm and works very similar to a turner, but without the turner? Think sallet and bevor type overlap, but circumventing the neckline rather than the lower head. scratch that. Think great bascinet with a split in the head and neck and an overlap between the two.

I'm aware of similar configurations depicted in art.

There is an enormous amount of evidence for oddities, one offs and experiments in armour. Some of these may have had brief periods of use in certain regions. I have seen at least 2 English 14thC effigies where the limb armour articulates directly without a cop- yet you will NEVER see this discussed in a book!

There is evidence of a number of different configurations. There are late period close helms that literally clamped down onto a rotating collar/gorget. There are helms that opened and closed like a close helm that have encorporated bevors and flares that cover that entire neck. There even som oddities that seem to sit very low on the neck line.

I think it comes down to style, and what exactly you are trying to do.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.
