Interest?: Rivetting tongs for wedge and round rivet maille

Post by LWCM »

Hey all,

I FINALLY got my tongs done. I was thinking about making a few more to sell as a way to offset my cost at making my one. Thought I would check here to see if there'd be any interest? They are set up for wedge rivetting on one side and round rivetting on the other. I was thinking about a $15 price tag.

What says the AA? Anyone interested? If so, I'll get some blanks this weekend and have at it.

Thanks for your input!

Oh, hell yes, sir.

Did you also make a piercing drift, for the hole for round or wedge rivets? *hopeful here*

I'm 98% interested... I'd like to see a pic first, but I'd probably be in on a set. I need one right now!

Ditto. I could use a wedge setting plier.

Pic?

At that price, sure. I have round rivet tongs but the more the merrier.

This is what I really need, a drift for round rivet holes.

Long time lurker, though this inspired me to finally register.

I have been looking for riveted maille tools! I'm interested primarily in wedge riveted for my preferred period of reproduction.

I would be interested in a set of tongs - a wedge piercing tong and a wedge setting tong, if possible. I have very limited access to metalworking facilities so I had to ask :D .

Hope to see some pictures!

Wow, I had no idea there would be this much interest. Thanks!

I'll try to answer all the questions asked thus far:

1. Nope, I don't make (or know how) any piercing tongs. There are a bunch of resources on the 'net on how to make them though. I'd suggest the rivetted maille yahoo group as they have a ton of info.

*reading back over the thread*

Oh, I guess that was the only question asked. Konstantin says that he uses masonry nails that have been ground to shape to pierce rings. Making rivetted maille is a big enough PITA for me that I have little desire to make my own rings. Years ago I bought a sizeable stash that will keep me occupied for a while.

I got voluntold to work tomorrow so I won't be able to make it to the store till Sunday. I'll make another pair for pics and if y'all still want to pull the trigger I'll make some more. These might fit in a small flat rate box (which would be HANDY) but I know that they'll fit in a flat rate envelope :).

@Wade: Yup the more the merrier indeed. My last set broke when I was in the middle of a project. FRUSTRATING.

On hiatus at the moment. The tongs that I bought are acting different than the original ones I made. Way frustrating. I'm going to blowtorch these buggers to anneal them soon as I track down a torch that I can borrow.
