I'm led to understand there are deployed fighters who have loaner gear. Can this wonderful rumor be true? Also, (long shot) are there any of them at KAF?

If it is any help. There is from my understanding a strictly rapier group with loaner gear that converge on the boardwalk at KAF. I never did make it over there from where I was (Leatherneck) but a couple of my guys who got deployed to the Army did see them practice there a few times. Hope this helps

I know you are looking for KAF but when I was at BAF I know they practiced Sundays at 1400L, if anybody is looking for the group there. Sorry I dont remember where they practice, i never had to time to make it.

I will verify for you. While I was out there they were meeting up Thursday evenings. I will get the exact time. Tried to get people interested while I was at Leatherneck, but no luck.

I just heard back, mostly everyone is back stateside, there is one person out there right now. If you want a contact and are heading out there, since he's looking to try and start it back up. PM me and I'll get you in contact with him.

To tell you the truth, hopefully not a next time, I'll retire in 2012 if I don't pick up the next paygrade (Chief) in 2011 8) .
I was however, able to get a wiccan/ pagan group together out there though.

At KAF, ask around for Sgt (not sure what exact rank) John Atkinson. He's a combat engineer, out of Ft. Hood (Hell's Gate, Ansteorra). He goes by Ionnas Dassalene (spelling completely wrong), a Byzantine persona. He's the guy to talk to.

Tell him Spearweasel said hello.

We have a BAF heavy, rapier and cut&thrust on Sunday and Thursday at camp Cherry-Beasley (by North DEFAC) 1900 to 2200. If it's cold, we go inside to the MWR building next to the Red Cross building.

You can email me for questions

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Archive,

You doth rock mightily.

I was thinking of sending a "slice of home" this holiday season, but never considered sending some rattan or an old elbow cop. When my brother was deployed the first time, 1990-1991, we sent him some "trading materials" and other necessities. This is just too sweet.

And we have a bunch of rapier kit here on KAF.
I'll only be here for two more weeks, though.

I was introduced to Rapier when I was in KAF. It's what got me back into the SCA. Now about 10 months from now or so, I'll be going back to the stan...this time to BAF. I am super excited to go. Yeah. 7 months away from my family, getting mortared and rocketed again, stacking some more PTSD in my brain...but gosh darn it, I'll still be able to do some heavy fighting. Huzzah!
And to the guys in BAF...keep it going. I'm trying to convince some guys from my unit to take up heavy fighting so I can bring at least a few warm bodies to bolster the numbers.

Okay, if there is anyone else at KAF reading this, rapier practice is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 2100 at the stage on the Southeast corner of the boardwalk.

Any and all fighters, spectators, generally bored folk are cordially invited to come participate/watch/hangout at our practices. Thanks to some wonderfully generous folks back in the states, we have or will have plenty of loaner gear for anyone who wants to come out and play.

Nothing has arrived yet, but I've received two emails saying that gear is or will soon be in the mail. Thank you, by the way, for your help with that. We very much appreciate it.

I feel you pain, gentle cousin. When I was out there we had enough kit to get 2 fighters on the field and that was it...though Fred and I made it 4 at a time by going out with daggers while the others had swords. My goodness...that was fun. Dagger fights (buckler or not) are painful experiences...yet so dang fun!

Brother Fred, if you are on this board...

Rapiers for KAF

Post by DukeAvery »

I have modest order of some new equipment in the works for you guys - some blades and a pair of gorgets hopefully. As soon as the purveyor is ready the funds are ready to go out.

I will not forget.

That is very generous, Your Grace. Blades and gorgets are exactly what we need equipment-wise. Our two current loaner hilts are still in good shape, but the blades are just about at the end of their lifespans. This, combined withe the other donations should be more than adequate to keep our group here running indefinitely. So, I'm going to call an end to the donations after this one. Too many donations would have us drowning in excess gear for which we have no use.

I feel compelled to say that I was surprised by the extremely enthusiastic response we have gotten to our call for assistance. The overwhelming generosity of the SCA community as a whole and the surprising financial backing of specific individuals, such as His Grace and our Atlantian benefactor, has been a bit of an eye-opener for me.

It is a rare thing to find such a community as the SCA. Its members have demonstrated such charity, fraternity, and patriotism as I could not have imagined without some sort of telethon. I find myself both humbled and honored to count myself a member of an organization whose rolls include such exemplary individuals. Thank you all for your support, and know that if any of those among you who has rendered your aid to us has need of my assistance in the future, you need only ask, and I shall provide such help as I am able.

(I'd go on, but I seem to have run out of words... :) )

Meanard,

I also have gear here at BAF. I am going home in April, and am looking to either send the gear to Shindan if they want it, store it here at BAF or pass it your way. Please let me know.

I'll be going home in April as well. We can discuss options closer to then. There is a Canadian civilian here who co-manages the loaner gear. He should be around for a while. I'll pass along your contact info. Thank you.
