Viking / Norse metal-tipped hat?

Post by Catarina »

My husband and I do a "homemade Christmas" every year - and this year I'm planning on getting his garb spruced up a bit. And, since Atlantia's Twelfth Night is 'viking' themed this year.... I want to make sure my resident Viking looks fabulous. :)

I was flipping through the sundries at RQP, and came across these:

The little hat tips? My interest in Viking clothing is limited to making sure he looks decent - so I don't know too much about it. The most common hats I've seen are the little 4 and 6 panel closely fitted hats, like this:

....but I really like the little metal bob. Can anyone point me to a picture of a hat that this was used on?

thanks! :)

The hat is really nothing more than a cone that fits the head. The end is sewn onto the top of the cone. It folds over to the side of the head. Seen mostly being worn in Eastern Scandinavia. Seems to be of Rus origins. ??There is an Aussie gent who had a site with a really nice kit with a hat like this. Webpage doesn't load anymore. At least the link I have doesn't.

I'm looking to make one of these in the Americanized 'Santa" style and I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to attach the fur trim and the pom-pom at the tip?

While the usual assumption is that the points were attached to a Santa type hat as shown above,
This assumption may not be correct

At Birka, if I am not mistaken, no actual hat remains were found - only the pieces

Birka had quite a few artifacts which led to reasonable assumption that it was either a Turk (Khazar) trading collony or at the very least that Turk (Khazar) merchants formed a strong influence.

Now, there are a set of digs in the Caucas mountains where full articles of Alanian/Khazar clothing were found including hats.

This is a hat/helmet made of leather, lined with linen, and covered with silk. The other hats found were in the same basic "helmet shape".

I propose that it is quite likely that the hats of the folks burried at Birka which had the metal cone tips may well have been of this shape rather than the Santa Hat shape.

The Birka find with the cone and the silver wire balls found the silver parts behind the base of the head which indicates a floppy hat to me.

However with 10 total finds with silver or gold braid on the head area it is possible one or more looked like that at Birka.

Yes
But a fir brim or a cloth ear cover?
I'm saying - based on the Caucases finds -- perhaps a conical topped version of a "foreign legion" hat

Brilliant! Using this as my inspiration, I cooked up this little number for my Viking husband's Christmas present:

And the obligatory action shot!

Done in a grey-blue wool flannel, lined in undyed silk twill. Trim is recycled from an old fur coat. :) The little metal bit is from RQP:
