WTS Bascinet and aventail ( Cad top)

Post by Samuel »

the entire helm is 12g mild steel, its about a decade old now with zero dents. it has some minor dings (metal on metal contact) but overall still shiny. ( need a run on the buffing wheel)

the top was made by Master cad of the midrealm who doesnt make armor anymore I dont think.

the aventail is a stainless steel custom knut order with brass dags and a brass border.

all the hardware is included sans padding.

the helm is 29" around. I havent the inclination to do the math but.. should give a better idea of what all heads it will take.

What does the brass say? I swear it looks like it says "Je suis seule." That can't be right.

the brass is some saying my ex-wife got for me off bablefish I think. supposed to be something along the lines of " this helm is property of samuel if found please return."
at this point its mostly squiggly lines:D

Cad is still making armour to some degree, but I'll say that the helm certainly looks plausibly his. It very much is in his style, save for the grill, which is a bit different than I usually see him do. Does it have is name stamped into the back at all? It is usually his M-O to do so.

However, I'll tell you that if it can be confirmed to be made by Cad, you can get a pretty price for it.

'CAD' in back....

same helm worn by me in fall 03 midrealm crown as seen on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38VSrorKZxA

I got the top from him while I was stationed in turkey. the grill is modeled after eldrids work.

If you read the whole post I did SAY " the top was made by master cad"
no illisions here..

since he was at midrealm crown in 03 and remarked how pleased two of his helms where in the finals Id think he wouldnt suddenly deny this helms existance.

It's pretty, bulletproof and by Cad, and my head's the right size. I'd be on it if only I hadn't just spent this season's major armor budget on fingered gauntlets. Se la vie.

Between Cad's work and the Knuut camail, I wouldn't start lower than $500 (inasmuch as I can't afford it regardless. :) )

I didn't mean to be imprudent at all, I was just concerned for my friend is all. I just wanted to be sure you weren't using his name to fetch a bigger price or anything like that. Cad's helms are highly prized, and seldom are found on the resale market. I hope you didn't take offense at all. Sometimes dishonesty works its way into the classified and I was just doing my part to help with that.

Best of luck on the sale, and to whomever wins this helm. It will indeed last you for years!

I would imagine anything shy of 700 (low balling it) would be insufficient for a cad helm and custom aventail

not a problem.. I actually met cad first when I lived in rochester theodl archer, therica and "bob" told me about him and I made a trek up to the st paul area to meet him. shortly after I hit him up for a helm I knew he had in the shop:D ( this being in the early 90s)

the top is his. the grill is by me using a brion price center pivot. I had reasoned if ever I wanted to make another visor, best to have a supply of hinges.

His visors generally have square barstock down the center so I can understand questioning it.

Im selling it because im on blood thinners after getting a pulmonary embolism from surgery and may be on them for life. with that facing me I decided to make a whole new kit in the hope that I wont, when I take the field again it will be very much a phoenix moment.

It sounds like we have a number of shared friends then, if you're referring to Theoweard L'Archier down in Rochester. I did recognize the hinge as one of Brian's, but Cad has been known to make them that way by hand. Tomorrow Cad and I are actually going to be in the shop to do the attachment for my hinge and grill - I'm excited to learn his method.

I wish you the very best, Samuel, if you take the field again. I have a good friend, Cad's apprentice Frederick, who is experiencing something similar. He has grown attached to the metamorphosis of the dragonfly metaphor. Its a tough road, but with patience and care you can play again. Cheers!

This thread makes me feel old. I remember both Alaric and Samuel as "up and coming unbelts." To see a clip of them both as knights and fighting in the finals of Midrealm Crown... and realize that this happened over 7 years ago... unpossible.

Cheers,

Any interest at all in separating the pieces?
