A Review: Phoenix Steel (long, pic intensive)

Post by Cillene mac Conghalaigh »

So last week I was out of town on a very long very exhausting business trip. I returned Friday absolutely worn out and spent (still trying to get caught back up and get re-invigorated!). When Saturday rolled around I received a package that took me from 0 to 110 in nothing flat! My shiny new 16th century Scottish burgonet from the masterful folks at Phoenix Steel had arrived. It has since been strapped, padded and is ready to go for a test drive tonight at our local fighter practice! Here then is a brief review with some pictures:

Quality of the helm: I have only owned one other helm which is a joint production between Mattmaus and Master Dane both of the Colorado Springs area. It’s a fine helm to be sure:

I have handled others though and in comparison I would have to give this one high marks. All in all it is a beautifully constructed piece. If I were to critique it I would ask for a bit cleaner welds on the bar grill and some rounded grinding on the prong the grill hangs by and some of the ends of the twisted rope. That being said I have be extremely ‘nit picky’ to point these out. Final score on quality, 4 out of 5.

Fit: My first impressions where, “Dear lord that’s a big helm!â€

Cillene,

Thanks for the review. I've sent a PM conserning your other question. I would add that you may actually get a better answer if you posted it to the Armour Construction section. I'm sure that you could get a wealth of information or a better or clearer way of doing it.

I've actually held that helm.

It is definately one of Waldryk's nicest he's done as far as historic lines go.

VERY well done.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

I like mine more(also made by Waldryk) :) . But I know that the closed face helms don't get the love they should on here.

Either way, this is a pretty helm too.
