Dish of the day ( A junkyard tool thread )

Post by The Iron Dwarf »

No, nothing to do with cookery...

yes I got these from a junk yard ( scrap yard here in the UK )

I have had for some time 3 huge stainless steel shallow dishes and it is time I did something with them.

Image
from memory the dish is about 17" inside and about 1 1/2 deep, it is about 1/2" thick at the flange and 1" thick in the middle.

the first thing for me to do is plug up the central hole, this is 1" pipe thread and I have a stainless plug to screw in, grind flush and weld in place from the back.

next there are 2 smaller holes at the edge that I will weld up.

the inside is smooth and even so needs little doing to it and the underside of the flange will have 3 feet made to stand the whole thing on.

at a guess it is about 60 to 70 lbs.

I will get one done then offer it for sale and then maybe do the others if there is demand.

dont know if people want such a huge shallow dish or what it could be used for but am confident someone will need it.

more pix as it progresses and tomorrow I will measure it.

originally this was a hatch on a huge tank of some sort

Come on! A little lava rock some copper tubing and fittings and a propane bottle and you could have your own flambeaux! Take a couple of plastic dolls and re-cast them in bronze for legs and you can put them along the driveway and cut way down on the number of "un-official" visitors!

got no plans to use it, will just make it up and sell it.
there is no point in me trying to auction it here as most of you are in the us and shipping would cost a fortune ( unless you had connections in the US military here in the UK who could send it for you ).
will put it on ebay or ebid after offering it here first.
it will not be cheap though...

I hope someone needs one of these enough to pay a reasonable amount for it

well cleaned it up a bit today, plugged the central hole and ground down the plug so it is flush, also ground off most of the unwanted stuff on the back.

I think for the base for this I will just have some flat steel rolled and weld that on a little way in from the outer edge of the flange

measurements are ( now I have checked them instead of guessing )
diameter of dish 400mm 15 3/4" ( this is the inside measurement
depth of dish 40mm 1 9/16"
width of flange 50mm 2"
overall diameter 500mm 19 5/8" ( all measurements aprox )

more pictures later tonite when I get them off my phone

next weld up 2 smaller holes on edge of dish
weld round central plug
clean up both the above and finish cleaning up the back
forges, stake plates, tools and lots more
