Books Relating to Construction

Post by sirtonyarmour »

Does anyone know if there are any other books like TOMAR in the works I heard rumor some years ago Brian Price was working on something 15th century related :D . Is there any truth to this? Does anyone else have anything brewing that we might could look forward too.

I think that you shoudl not hold out for another book from Price. It has been years, and as I understand it he isn't really making armour any more.

It is rather unfortunate that TOMAR is the best and only book on the market.

Would be nice if some of the masters got together and each wrote about a specific topic or technique and compiled it into one book or books

Years ago there was a series of articles written for the SCA. There was enuff intrest to collect some of the better articles and republish them as a CA issue. Then Raymond decided to publish a lot more of the accumulated information. The articles are a bit dated but still helpful if your just starting.
Alas most of them are out of print.

As a whole I think searching the archive for paticular projects provides a lot more information.
Most people are willing to share their experiance if you ask the right questions.

Yes, it would be nice.

Honestly, it won't happen. You are probably talking about 100s-1000s of hours of time and dedication primarily from people who need to make a living and for whom this would be a labor of love, not something that would pay.

Comments, hints and notes in places like this and in person along with a few lectures like Mac has done and study sessions like Tom and I do are probably what will happen.

Start with the existing book (TOMAR), articles from the Hammer, videos like those from Eric Dube for construction. Read and study books on armour. Visit museums. Stare at as many pictures of authentic pieces as you can find. Ask questions. You will learn a lot from all of these paths.

haha I know... just wishful thinking.
I have honestly learned just as much here as I did from TOMAR, every post here has a lot of information, even if its a tiny little nugget, its still valuable.

I've got a word document in which I've got a bunch of headings and subheadings. Helmets - bascinets; Legs - knees etcetera. Into that document I put all the little nuggets I find. The result, a couple of years later, is a gold mine.

The armour archive is the book you are looking for, you just need to print 10 years of posting and discussions and read it all. :D
I'm glad I joined in 2002 and read it everyday since then... I won't be in your shoes. :D

I am currently looking at every thread going backwards and I am at 2005 now. Been doing that for a few hours everyday for the past week. Wow there has been a lot I've learned. I would suggest anyone new to search the forum every time your not sure of something... Its there, somewhere...

I've sorta contemplated doing a how to book for a full 14th century harness including patterns. The coat of plates instruction set hasn't hit it's target earnings yet though.

I'm curious, where is that for sale? I just had a look on your website but could not see it.

Cheers,

Judging from the quality of the CoP instructions, that would be a seriously awesome asset.

Has the info.

The CoP set has to hit at least $500 before I'd consider it.
