welcome to the archive,
her are a few pointers that will help us help you.
first what price range are you looking to stay around?
second, do you have a style of helmet or time period you are looking for?
do you already have fighting experience or are you putting together a kit to get started.
from here we should be able to give you all the direction you will need.

Here is some initial info on armour for your personna. http://www.knight-test.aspery.com.au/armour/english-medieval-knight1213.php

Since you are new, don't just buy armour. Get enough to get you on the field. Ask around for loaner armour until you KNOW that you like to get pounded like a tent stake.

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH . . . and when you think you have enough information - RESEARCH some more!!!

I absolutely agree with the above: great that you've settled on a time and place for your kit, but don't buy something just to have something to wear. You can certainly get the right gear together by Pennsic.

And doesn't WT have some crazy number of helms, like 12? He can loan you one to get you on the field, I'm sure.

I'll be at Sapphire. But I don't sell armor.

However, I have done 12-13th century Norman since 1984. No worries, not a one of them wore onion tops!

I have no idea about VT's library, but the Osprey Man at Arms and Elite series are great introductions to a time and place. They have one called The Normans and another called Norman Knight. Feel free to ask me anything about 12th-13th century Norman England. I won't even insist you wear a flat top helmet.

And if you don't know who I am, ask WT to point me out. :D

Oh, and it's a steep price for a first helm, but here's one that just went on sale and maybe you're a republican oil executive.

Baldricserf2william,
Do you know the measurements for you head?
Specifically, caliper measurements of your brow to base of skull and ear to ear?
I have a helm that might work for you. Please check here.
If this is something you are interested in, I would want $280.00.
All the best,
Rhys

Unless they have expanded, in the past few years it really isn't all that great for researching medieval armour.

That is, assuming he is a student. Not at all an unreasonable assumption.

Baldric, I have both of the books Sir Corby has recommended if you wish to borrow them.

We're starting to get a little 12th Century assembly going here in central VA.

That helmet Gethin links to is perfect for look, but I would be VERY cautious about 14 gauge tops in Atlantia. I don't know Hjalmr's work personally, maybe it is all extra-reinforced, but if it isn't, it won't last here.

I am not sure if it fits within your time line parameters.

I would recommend that you borrow one, while going to practice and events. Even if it isn't your time period.

While at various events, ask around about experienced fighters helmets. Get the pros and cons about the helmet style and that armourer in particular.

Hang out with the other SCAdians. Back when I was in BD we used to have get togethers at people's apartments all the time.

While there, take a look at their books. Find something you like, cross reference it with what you have learned, and pick out your helmet and armourer.

Then place an order.
