SSSSHHHHH - top secret kaftan preview...

Post by Adric13 »

this just the rough draft - the embroidrey on the cuffs and collars is still being worked on and the length needs to come down a bit and the cuffs will NOT (read as NO, nada, zip, aint gonna happen) be a different colour on rollout. but here is a sneak peak.

still up for debate is the sgt pepper bands across the front so sound off yea/neh or dont care.

have no idea about pricing as this is still just getting going.

yes im wearing shorts and a tshirt under it - get over it - or its nuthing but posed bathroom pics from here out.

Awesome! I can't wait to place an order for some of these. I really like them with the trip setup, but I am just as happy to add my own.

Looking great!

Ottoman Turkish would have it as a big gore, so that would be my preference.

This one but as stated thus just the round one prototype. It will Prolly have at least 2 reworks before we get I nailed down - but I'm trying to have it ready for GW next year so it needs to be ready in the next couple months so we can get em in to yalls hands to check em out and stuff.

I would vote yes on the sgt pepper bands, but only if it was longer and had the hand flaps like the Polish Zupans. Basically I'm interested in zupans and that almost is one. Not sure if my vote counts though since I wouldn't be ordering in the first batch anyways, it'd be 6 months to a year before I likely got one.

I like the idea of longer. Most kaftans I have seen have been knee-length or even a tad longer. Certainly the later period Hungarian ones were substantially longer (almost top of boots in the wood cuts). Sgt. Pepper theme, would recommend no. This could be added and the plain gives you more versatility in my opinion. What are you doing on the buttons?

All that aside, I am in if you have big sizes.

Big is gonna be a given, long is relative but yea they will be long. Unless I can score a huge deal on buttons we will prolly going the metal look plastic ones and then offer different buttons as an upgrade and pass the savings along

If you're going for Rus then I'd say lose the collar and add the sgt Pepper style bands. Depending on price I'd probably be interesed in 1 or 2.

I'd prefer to have longer ones with a large gore in the back. I'd be in for at least 2 probably more depending on the price.

I'll swing by and see you at Lillies again this year towards the end of the week.

Cloth covered buttons a possibility? Grant you, I don't know if they are even appropriate.

Definitely longer.

I would lean away from the bands. People will want something specific, so this way they can put on whatever they want.

You might want to mention which culture's kaftan this is patterned on in your ad copy, so that folks know what they are getting.

Just thinking outside the box here, but have you thought about making a soapstone mold and casting your own buttons in pewter?
After your initial outlay for materials and equipment, you could literally cast buttons for pennies.

that actually was an option and im gonna spend some time with cap'n jammie at lillies looking at getting some stuff to do just that. but im prolly going with RTV stuff for reuse and speed of start up depending. there is a dude here that is an amazing caster that im gonna do a little more explore with too. but each shirt needs 15 buttons - 10 up the front, 2 on each cuff and one incase there is one that lost. 100 coats x 15 buttons and its a week long venture. but i like doing that stuff anyway so it will atleast be fun.

Bribe someone. Give them a free kaftan/tunic/pants et al. if they will cast the buttons for you. :)

Nope, sure ain't. Make it longer, and it's a very good shot at 13-14c Hungarian.
EDIT: though in that case you'd want more fabric in the skirt so it pleated out, and a higher collar.

hey that looks pretty nifty! best of all I wouldn't have to use a hair tie to keep the cuffs out of the way when doing stuff, especially hot stuff with metal. keep us updated on your pricing estimates.
