European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Dr. Tobias Capwell's new book Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection has just been released.
The collection of arms and armour at the Wallace Collection is widely recognized as being one of the largest and most important in the UK. The collection consists of around 2,500 objects, representing both European and Oriental arms and armour.
In this book, Curator of Arms and Armour Tobias Capwell along with David Edge, Armourer and Head of Conservation, introduce this significant collection in an armoury historical context highlighting about 70 of the collection’s most interesting objects spanning from before 1400 to after 1800. Among these are: the earliest piece in the collection, a Scandinavian sword dating from the early medieval “Viking age”, a golden tournament helmet of Emperor Ferdinand I from 1555, a dagger from 1599–1600 belonging to French Henri IV, and a flint-lock pistol dating from c. 1738-44 of Prince Louis, Dauphin of France, the eldest son of King Louis XV.

Thanks for the plugs, Gwen! I'll have to wait until after my birthday later in the month to pick this up, but I'm looking forward to it greatly! Cheers.

Will Historic Enterprises be selling these as well in the US Gwen?
An aside. Did Tobias ever finish his work on British effigies and armour?
Thanks for the heads up.

RPM- Hmm, I hadn't considered it, but I think we could. Let me investigate that possibility.
If you're referring to his dissertation, I think it's still bogged down in red tape. I'll check on that as well.

To keep things in the loop. Get the (more expensive) one with the digital images. It should be well worth the money. I have seen the images and a preview of the device. I tossed a little more info on the classified post.
I will be ordering... real soon.
As to his other book - last time I heard they were getting all the details together to open the subscription later this year. It will be in 2 volumes, it got to big for one. Each sold separately. The first appears to be the one with the English stuff and the second the one with all of the continental comparisons. It will be sold by subscription as a limited edition.
Buy that too when it becomes available.

Goody, Something Liz can get me for Christmas!
Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Can she get me one, too?
Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Did this ever actually get released? I ordered it from Amazon (with the digital images) back in October and it's still on back order.

Yes, it's in print. We picked up a copy at the The Original Reenactor's Market last month. It looks like it is available thru Amazon.co.uk-
Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection- Capwell
I will check with Toby to see if anyone in the US is carrying it.

Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
I've just emailed Toby, and if I can work something out with his distributor to get a few dozen copies to fill Christmas orders here in the US, I will do so. Online sellers like Amazon make carrying books a poor business proposition for me long term, but I'm willing to help everyone out by getting enough in to fill some Christmas orders. It's a wonderful book, well worth having and just the sort of thing people who like armour should find under their tree on Christmas morning.

Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
For other reasons I just bothered Toby about the big one with the digital catalogue. That is the one we should all want. It is a lot more money, but well worth it.
As of today he said that they hadn't shipped it yet, they were working out some kinks in how the digital piece was working. He was hoping for January or February.

This is the version I am looking to get, Hopefully it won't suffer from "designed for Mac and modified to work with Windows" issues.

Don't know. The demo I saw of a subset was on Windows. It worked at that point. But I have no idea what the people at the publishing house are using. I was (evil me) sitting at Toby's computer watching him play with it in his office upstairs in the Wallace.
Anyway, he is working on it. So keep our fingers crossed.

Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Righto- Toby's book is available thru American distributor CaseMate, and you can order it here-
European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection- Capwell
Fortunately, the book ships from the States, so you can order directly from the distibutor and it will be easy to have it under the tree for Christmas.
Unfortunately, it ships from the states which means I can't offer you the signed copies Toby suggested.

Where does one get a copy of this?
Are the images in this different than the photo books in the Wallace and Churburg collections by Carlo Paggiarino?

Wade from the other thread wrote:Quality of the pictures.
Each piece was taken apart, put in a light box/bag/booth and individually shot from multiple angles. They aren't "art" quality like Carlo's work, but they are professional, clear and detailed. I was there when they were shooting some of them and I sat at Toby's desk in July and saw a preview of some of the printed pages and the digital device that shows the digital images.
Buy the book, make sure you get the digital images. Don't hesitate. You will not.... not, NOT regret the tiny expense. I am off to buy mine.

Gwen,
I'd like to buy a signed copy from Toby, but I would want the digital library as well. Is this only soft cover?

Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Chris- Since he offered up front, I'm pretty sure I can arrange that for you. I only asked him about the catalog and not the digital stuff, so let me work out the details with him and get back to you. I don't like to conduct business via the forums, so please drop me a line at gwen @ historicenterprises.com.
If anyone else is interested in signed copies, drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.
Thanks-
Gwen

Re: European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection
Oooh! I'd love a signed copy of the book in actual paper format.
Does anyone know if the digital version is ONLY the pictures or if it is a digital copy of the book as well. I'm tempted to purchase both.

Sean, this is how amazon has it titled...
MASTERPIECES OF EUROPEAN ARMS AND ARMOUR IN THE WALLACE COLLECTION AND COMPLETE DIGITAL CATALOGUE OF EUROPEAN ARMS AND ARMOUR [Paperback]
So I think you get the book with a usb drive that has the digital library on it.

I'm working the details on the signed copies out with Toby and the Wallace right now and should have more info by the end of day. If you are interested, please drop me a note at the above address.
It seems that the digital version won't be available until the new year, but it looks like we'll be able to offer signed versions of that as well.
