Vendel Age / Sutton Hoo Find: The Great Golden Buckle

Post by Hjorleif »

Hi,

I'm looking to purchase the "Great Golden Buckle" set, and aside from Raymonds (which is great for what it is, I'm just looking for a bit more detail), can't seem to locate it. I was told that somewhere on the intertubes there are a couple of Polish merchants that have museum quality pieces. Anyone have any idea where they might be found?

The original looks like this:

Thanks!

Mine was made by Torgul. He is not around anymore but I know he had a couple of apprentices. I thought Urweg made one but I couldnt find it on their website. When mine is polished it looks exactly like your picture. Its not polished very often.

Have you talked to Ottr about this? (He is a member of your household. Don't know where he moved to after Marquette, but Asviðr should know).

He did some buckle and strap ends for me, along with a couple 'Santa hat' tassles.

Excellent work.

I believe he is appretenticed to HG Tarrach.

Good luck, and if you talk to him, let him know I said "Hi"

I talk to Ottar with great frequency actually! Right now, he and his lovely lady Ljomi are in Alaska working on awesome film projects.

As it happens, all of his casting equipment is in my garage.... Which I've used, alot (100 pounds of refactory and like 15 pounds of wax). However, even under his mighty tutilage, my skill in carving (I'm a pretty decent technician with the technical aspects of casting at this point) is poor. I've made my own vendel belt plaques and a custom buckle set that I'll be using, but I wanted to get a decent GGB to pull it all together.

So yeah, he's not available at this time. But I'll vouch, his work is top top notch.

I'll let him know you said hi!

Take care,

Hrolfr, you've made me sad! Upon reflection, I think every cool piece of armor (or even art project) I've made over the last 4 years or so has been supported or supervised by Ottar. From the "face" on my helm that Ottar helped me to pattern out to the skill learned in raising and shaping said face or learning the complete process of lost wax casting.... all of it supported by Ottar and Ljomi.

I would never have met either of them had it not been for the SCA. Indeed, the game is fake, but the friends are real and lifelong.

Also, HG Tarrach's work is both inspiring and bad ass.

Cheers,

I thought you knew him and had just forgotten his skill.

I loved the travel tafl board he made

Ottr is the person who got me started doing translations.

Heck of a person! :D
