Want to hire a retainer for Great North Eastern War.

Post by MJBlazek »

I have been kicking this idea around in my head for a little while now.
Representing a Lord, I feel that I shoudl have a retainer.
I would like to hire one for the upcomming Great North Eastern War in July of this year in Hebron Maine.
I will pay the site fees for said person,
Supply with lodging for the event,
Supply with food (and drink) for the event,
and offer a small stipend of spending money.

The person would have free leave to enjoy the event as they please as long as all duties were met.
The duties would include:
Cooking
General tidying of my camping area,
Helping with armoring up and armoring down,
Laying out clothes for court,
Supplying any visitors to the camp with a fresh beverage,
and carrying my Shield and Helmet to the battlefield. (not from, as I would not want them to have to wait around while I fought to see when I would be finished.)

Anybody interested? :D

I would except my cooking would either:
1. Burn down the camp
2. Kill/maim/poisin you

However I know of a GREAT cook but he lives down in NJ and probably would need a ride up but seriously can cook clean and be a very great retainer =D

I too aspire to this sort of franchise. One of these days...

Good luck finding your retainer. Bonus points if it's a him and you refer to him as 'Concord'.

There is or at least was a yahoo group called SCA Maids and Valets that was set up to put people wanting to hire together with those wanting to be hired. They might have switched at least in part to facebook but that might have been another group I used to belong to.

This is a brilliant idea. Stealing.

I had a friend who had never been to an SCA event so I brought him to a pas I was in, to act as my herald.

He stumbled during the heralding (He REALLY wanted to do it, just got tripped up on my apparently difficult to pronounce name), and felt bad for it afterwards, so he spent the whole day trying to "make it up to me" by essentially being my retainer. He took my helm when I left the field, brought me drinks, handed me my helm and gauntlets in the proper order when I re-armed and handed me my weapons.

It. Was. Amazing.

I can't begin to describe how much more badass I felt with somebody running around seeing to my needs.

Allow me to clarify I did NOT ask him to do this, he insisted.

Heh, I'm envious. As many years as I lived and played in Endewearde I never once made it GNEW and it's all of 20 minutes from my parents' house in Litchfield and only what, an hour from Unity? Figures huh?

Would they have to be willing? As the head of my household, technically I can loan you one of mine.

We can discuss money later...

Hi,

On hiring a retainer, I would go with these guidelines IF I get to an event and can hire a retainer.

Retainer duties:
1. Armouring me up.
2. Armouring me down.
3. Helping pack up and load the vehicle.
4. Videotaping the event (especially my fighting so I can figure out what I'm doing wrong or right).
5. Watering and feeding me at the right times.
6. Setting up the day shade.
7. Setting up the folding chairs and covering them up.

Retainer "pay":
1. Site fee paid for.
2. Fuel paid for, providing I do the driving to and from the event.
3. Feast fee paid for.
4. Snack food, water and other non-feast food stuff paid for.
5. Loaner garb loaned (if needed).
6. AFTER I'm done fighting and the armour is packed away in the vehicle, the retainer is free to do whatever they want (within the legal laws at the federal, state, kingdom and barony levels).
7. I will act as THEIR retainer at the feast, in between juggling for the kids and crowns.

That's my plan IF I get a chance to go to an event. If it is a multi-day event I'd loan the day-shade out for the retainer to sleep in while I head to the hotel.

With respect,

I'll admit the most appealing thing I saw on the list was the "Help me drink the homebrew I'll be bringing." She'd have her own lodging, and actually most likely be on the household meal plan. Hmm, I'm seeing issues with this plan.

Better yet, if she called you "Mister Eddie's Father"
..."It has to be 100% pleasure, Sir Knight"

"And why is that, good Squire?"

"Because if there were any work involved, it would be delegated to the Squires!"

Also hiring retainer, for Japanese persona. Duties include:

-Fighting for me, to the death if necessary
-Guarding me while I sleep
-Providing sound military council
-Being extremely well mannered and polite
-Committing seppuku for failing in any of these duties
"Why is the sky blue?"
"Because God loves the infantry."

Oh this takes me back to my first days in the SCA, back in the mid 80's. I was an "indentured servant" to a local couple. I remember that people were totally offended by this, and wanted to "save me", being as I was very young at the same.

But what a great deal it was! The couple took me to events, feed me, clothed me (quite well, as he said that it was the sign of a wealthy lord to have a well dressed servant), put me up in a period pavilion, and even bought my first set of Armor! How can you go wrong with THAT?? Specially for a broke kid!

In return, I helped pack the gear and trailer before the event (what I would do anyway, for people taking me to an event), unload the trailer and set up pavilion and gear (again, what I would do for someone who took me to an event), do the dishes after meals (again...yeah..you get the point...) and last...I would stand behind them at times during the day, or bardics by the fire...and get them drinks and stuff.

I think I got the better end of the deal on this one! lol

I think the "Free run at night..." kind-of takes care of the camp followers part.
