Battle of Nations Videos

Post by Aaron »

Hi,

These videos rocked.

http://www.wics.com/newsroom/top_storie ... 5389.shtml

http://www.sj-r.com/video/x1331031809/M ... pringfield

I pray we can bring this sport back to the US and get it going within the SCA umbrella. The sweat, effort and speed (sometimes lack there of) made me feel akin to these noble fighters.

With respect,

-Aaron

Even for some kind of demo for the press - I dunno, but leaving your gorget off and your neck wide open just kind of sticks out like a sore thumb as an accident waiting to happen.

Having had to deal with the SCA and it's decades of screwing up equestrian activites and rules, I hope the last thing is that the SCA has any say over the BoTN style of fighting. This is NOT LCD style combat and not everyone can do it. SCAhas the advantage of making it real safe to be a medieval enthusiast, suit up, and not get hurt. One, I don't think the SCA would allow this, ever (as I've been in altered rules tourneys, and one of two reason I stopped doing full time SCA was the flack I got from a guy getting hurt trying to throw me) and shouldn't allow it. And two, they would bubble wrap it so much to the point that it wouldn't be "it" any more. YMMV, and this is my opinion only.

Considering they don't allow thrusts and spend most of their fight jumping on each other like hockey players in the corner... its probably a lot less risky than having a 300+lb dude run over you while you're busy with two of his pals. Funny what some people find safe or not. Different game, different priorities.

I don't want the SCA Inc. anywhere near the BOTN. Many of our fighters are participating and that is enough for me.

I personally think our system is better for various reasons.

You seem to be showing some restraint. Honestly that is what I see. Our mechanics (SCA) have a lot of emphasis on power but at the same time I can tell you aren't trying to "kill" your opponent. Do they have issue with very powerful shots? I understand you broke helms which is to be expected IMO but it appears that your skills were so far above your opponents that you played with him and only gave him some hard enough shots to let him know that you had his number. It was neat to see that after a few good blows he seemed less than interested in fighting you any longer LOL.

What would they do if you attempted to swing for the "kill"? Do they have rules about excessive force at all? Do you think they would create a rule if you did swing for the fences as it were? Scary concept for an SCA fighter using a steel weapon in combat I know. Honestly how hard were you actually trying to put the guy out? It looks like you could have done more but were being kind of nice like we normally are to each other in "friendly" SCA combat.

I agree on both counts. Our emphasis is more on strikes, using the weapons force to its full potential rather than simply grappling and riding each other to the ground.

It will be interesting to see if our fighters style has any significant effect on their rules and how they play the game. 8)

The BoTN ruleset will serve the exact same purpose in the U.S. as it does in Europe. It is a "club agnostic" international sporting ruleset for the Medieval Chivalric community.

That is it's purpose.

It should never replace, or supplant any Club's ruleset, including the SCA.

In that respect, it is exactly like what, for instance, Rene' of Anjou proposed in his le Livre des Tournois.

That being said, it will also (and in some respects already is) act as a proving ground for CERTAIN WMA preconceptions, regardless of which club any given practitioner belongs to. It's going to be, and already has been, a tremendous tool for truly understanding the mindset and the physicality of our Ancestors.

It's going to be a very bright future for Historical Western Martial arts of all flavors in North America.

For instance, Count Johnathan's question about force has a definitive answer, There are very poignent observations the team has, but we are going to wait to talk about them publically, for obvious reasons. (chuckle)

As for folk's concern about Felix's lack of a Gorget. Rest assured there was a valid reason for it, and steps were taken to mitigate that risk at the time. Felix is a Warrior, and so is Rudy. They were most certainly NOT going to perform in front of the Mayor of the Capitol city of Illinois, Various councel members, and State Senators because of an armor malfunction.

There are no rules regarding excessive force. There is a rule which says you should not deliberatley injure someone. I gave that guy the fight I thought he needed.

I see. That sounds like the same same thing basically so it makes sense then that you weren't putting the dude to the turf LOL!

Well done Nissan. :)

The singles combat with counted blows intrigues me. Nissan had to inform me of that goal for the 1v1 recently as I hadn't heard of it... I can't help but think of A Knight's Tale when I consider it, and it sounds damn fun...

Which blow broke the helm? None of them looked particularly heavy handed. The one shot at the end was pretty!

I think the people who are in danger of being hurt are their refs. No protection and from some of the melee footage from Quebec no concern of how close they get to the action. One ref got practially pinned to the wall by the press of the fighters.
