Tourney fencing(erics)
I would like to build a wooden fence to replace my Baronial eric(could someone educate me on the proper period term) ropes. So if anyone has some cool ones that they have made or period examples that would be awesome. Preferably without staking to the ground, but you do what you can.

Try this: http://www.greydragon.org/library/tourneyfence.html
The ropes around your tourney field are ropes. The term "eric" was originally a very old lame joke, referring to a piece of red cloth once used to demarcate a tourney field in the ancient days of the West Kingdom. My understanding is that it was not intended to become a commonly used term, but somehow it did. Unfortunately, there are actually people who believe it is a real medieval term. It is most commonly used in the West, occasionally heard in other western kingdoms, and rare east of the Mississippi. I have also heard it outside the SCA, from people who thought it was a period term. Sigh.

Thanks for these great plans. I was just looking for something like this.

"Lists" was a common term for the fenced in area for jousting. I am not sure if that term was used for foot combat as well.

Hmm maybe we can name our fencing 'the lists' and start a trend of people calling them by a more proper name.

Re: Tourney fencing(erics)
We used the greydragon plans that Mother of Heroes mentioned.
Here is a photo:

I would encourage you to paint it the two-toned style that we did, as it really makes it pop. Also, I'd suggest using a good quality, washable paint as otherwise you'll need to repaint every year or two.
And while the name eric somewhat bothers me, it bothers me much less than many of the other SCAdian terms such as "troll", "-crat" (except for autocrat), etc. Just my $0.02.

I do like the Greydragon design more than the St George lists. We have metal sockets that we have to pound into the ground. And while they look very clean and tidy, they have a tendency to warp after so much beating. Also they are very heavy and difficult to drive into the ground. Plus once they are in, it is difficult to adjust the lists.

Re: Tourney fencing(erics)
"Autocrat", "troll" and "fillintheblankcrat" weren't originally intended to be used other than in a modern context, where they may be silly but appropriate. I'm sure many of us as children thought it was hilarious to talk about the trolls in the troll booth at the bridge -- my brother and I probably drove our parents nuts doing this. I don't have a problem using --crat in a modern event announcement, but I think at event, they should have "Society names": steward, cook, kitchener, etc. In Meridies we call the person in charge of toilet paper, paper towels, porta-a-johns, etc. the nastycrat. Anyone have a period term that would apply? (No, Privy Councillor will not do.). Muckraker?

I can't cook or do numbers. So, at our household's events I'm the "garderobe steward"Mother of Heroes wrote:...In Meridies we call the person in charge of toilet paper, paper towels, porta-a-johns, etc. the nastycrat. Though it isn't wooden, we have this field:

The Summergate field was made with the same concept and looks great. Master Quinn made the posts:

Its hard to tell from the photos, but they really look great.
I love the wooden ones, but storage and transport issue have always been an issue.

Everyone says SCA and The Society, but in some regions they also say Scah and/or Scadian. Now, I happen to know the origins of both of these terms (in one case, the name of the person who invented it). I wonder what the current geographic distribution is.
Didn't this thread start out talking about tourney fences?
Re: Tourney fencing(erics)

This is the St George lists. We tried to match the look from King Rene's book of the tournament.

Hu Munz,
Do you have more information, or a link to a website which explains more about the construction of that list?
Thanks
Cheers,
jan

Re: Tourney fencing(erics)
We - the Company of St. George - built it and maintain it. We have never put up a web page about its construction. The upright posts are fence posts from Home Depot. The cross bars are 2x6s 6 feet long. They sit in joist hangers that are attached to the uprights. The sockets are 16 inch tall square metal tubing with a steel spike made from angle iron welded to the tubing (one per socket). There is not too much to explain.
Here is a link to a Flickr page with lost of pics with out lists in it. If you come out to GWW in Caid this fall you can see it in action.

You have to push the little yellow button to load it.
