Addicted to my shop
Addicted to my shop
Had to put the finishing touches on my substitute Lego motors and they had to sit for twenty minutes to let the epoxy set. So I pulled out the bone and started making naalbinding needles until someone needed to jump in on the bandsaw and got his piece stuck in the machine. So I put the bone away and pulled out the knife blanks I cut out with the CNC plasma cutter and cleaned one up and tried my hand at rough stock removal. I'd still be there if I didn't have an early morning. What a blast.
The knife turned out a lot better than I thought it would. I've got to clean it up a little more and then I'll add a wood handle and rivet it all together. Fun, fun, fun.

Guys, I think he is a member of one of those club / member shop things sometimes these are called HackerSpaces or Makerspaces.
You pay a monthly fee an get shop time. Usually they have lots of tools and gadgets that most people can't afford CNC, Plasma cutters, etc.
I toyed with the idea of opening one here locally but I let it drop due to already having too many irons in the fire.

The pictures on the site are all from when it first opened a few years back. Now.... More equipment, more lived in.

They had a couple of places like this at Camp LeJeune way back when. I spent many happy hours there while on active duty. Helped keep me out of trouble.Enrico di Venezia wrote:...he is a member of one of those club / member shop things sometimes these are called HackerSpaces or Makerspaces.

You find trouble? Unpossible.
I worked in one when I lived in Panama. It was nice having the access to equipment I couldn't afford. I also rebuilt my car at the Auto shop version on Ft Clayton.

Re: Addicted to my shop
Lets be honest here, speaking for myself, workshops have helped me get into just as much trouble as they should have prevented.

*different* trouble and often of a type more palatable to a SO....
Of course when I get what my wife calls "constipation of the soul" she sends me out to the shop and spending a couple of hours out there clears things up...

It burns me up that I live in such a cultural wasteland that there is no such place closer than an hour away. If it weren't for that nasty "employment" thing, I would already have moved to Oakland just to be near the Crucible.
