Fur, where can I find it?
Hey all, I'm looking for pelts or sections of fur at reasonable prices. Ideas?

Re: Fur, where can I find it?
Hm, what kind of fur does make a difference.
Rabbit fur is about as cheap as it gets- $3 to $5 average for a pelt.
Fox or coyote isn't too hard to get- but its nowhere near that cheap.
Bobcat is near the top end of price- and bear isn't legal to buy or sell in some states.
What do you need it for?
The intended function can make a difference, because theres some places that have small scraps for fairly cheap- But the scraps will usually be in little bitty pieces.
Moscow hide and fur comes immediately to mind... But I have no idea what your price range is.

Brettun's has some scraps-

Moscow hide and fur has a little of everything-

I'd have to think awhile to come up with other links-its been forever since I had reason to look for hair on hides.

Isn't that a badger? If so, Moscow should be able to help you out.

Moscow Hide & Fur is the cheapest place that I can find to buy furs except for the Fur Rondy auction in Anchorage sometimes. http://www.furrondy.net/
What kind of fur(s) are you looking for?
Sometimes there are deals on "vintage" fur coats on Ebay and in local thrift shops. Even a slightly ratty fur coat usually has enough nice fir left to re-purpose into trim.
It looks like you just missed a local rondy: http://www.spiritofvincennes.org/rendezvous/index.htm

Re: Fur, where can I find it?
Cedric,
Forgive me for asking in your thread, but in a related topic, does anyone know where I can get some rabbit meat (enough to feed 20+ people)? We are going to have a rabbit stew and a rabbit feast at Pennsic this year.

Re: Fur, where can I find it?
D. Forester, the butcher shop that I work at sells rabbit by the pound as a special order thing. PM me for details, and I am sure I can hook you up. I will be at pennsic, and will already be having a rendezvous with you for your package of steel.

That is most fortuitous. Thank you so much Zohar, I'll send you a pm. You'll come by and enjoy our hospitality?

There are a few online shops that will deliver directly to Pennsic like http://www.marxfoods.com/products/rabbitDougal Forester wrote:Cedric,

There are also local butcher shops and rabbit sellers nearby like: http://www.manta.com/c/mrs52t0/garrett-meat-processing or you can check Craig's List for that area.

Check e-bay for "craft cutter" or "cutter" furs. Those are the labels used to sell damaged coats etc.

I went to Iraq with someone from your area who for extra money was a trapper. You might ask around your older mom and pop gun/hunting supply stores about where to get some pelts and I'm sure they can point you in the correct direction.
Sadly I lost contact with the guy I knew otherwise I would direct you towards him.

Re: Fur, where can I find it?
Probably not what you need for this project, but in case other people are perusing the thread and looking - I have some grey sheepskin pieces (scraps from an upholsterer) I've been hanging on to for a few years without finding much use for yet. Used it to pad a few things, but now that I'm in Virginia I'm just not wanting much in the way or warm, lined clothing for some reason.
