Hey All You 14th Century Mafia Types!

Post by Dansknecht »

I'm not converting, don't worry, but I am looking for information on early to mid-14th century clothing.

I would be ridiculously appreciative if you guys could point me in the direction of extant/primary source images/texts/etc.

Thanks!!!

Who'll, for a good start, you'd could join the 14th Century Mafia page on Facebook. Lots of good info there.

I personally prefer the 14th century mafia facebook group without the "." at the end of its name, but I'm biased, and both have their merits. The "I want to be a..." board here on the archive will give you some starting points.
A couple starting points- just hop on google images and toss a couple of these in:
Grandes Chroniques de France- you'll have to filter that a bit since there are earlier and later images mixed in.
Luttrell Psalter - English, 1st half of the century.
You'll notice that clothing became progressively more form fitting after the Black Death, so early 14th and mid 14th century clothing are noticeably, though not dramatically different. By the end of the century some of the fashions are fundamentally different garments.

You'll want to read Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince, for sure. Also, the Museum of London's Textiles and Clothing has a lot of valuable info and extant fragments of clothing that have been useful in recreating whole pieces. You might also want to explore Else Ostergard's Greenland-related books.

Take a look too at Marc Carlson's diagrams here:

Chronological link page for various extant garments

There are many other sources that might come in handy, especially art-related, but these sources will give you a general understanding of the tailoring, layering conventions, etc.

The Romance of Alexander (1338-1344) is a popular source:

Lots of images of people of various social standings.

I just noticed this comment. Thank you, but I'd get a complex if I caught some guy staring at my hem whenever I was near... I'd begin to wonder if my hem had unraveled and if he were a seam-checker. :D
