sallet in progress

Post by Ironbadger »

The sallet I am making for SCA fighting.

I finally got time to cut and start the tail today...
I've been trying to cut a few hours loose for two weeks, and this is as far as I got today.

The skull is a 12 gauge top made by Ironmonger.
Who, by the way, I recommend most highly for speed and service!
Its welded halves, and very nicely made.
This is the "high center ridge" pattern.

The tail is 14 gauge mild, and for the moment theres a million hammer marks as I tried to figure out how to curve it without good stakes or forms...
Or for that matter, a raising hammer.

I'll fit it to the top by drilling holes from the back, and adding more as I squeeze the sides down tighter, bit by bit.
Bolts to start, then rivets as its fitted.

I might have made the skirt/tail a bit longer and deeper than ideal- but I'll know more as I get farther along.

This will be the first complete, fighting grade helm I have ever attempted...
Wish me luck.

Looks like everyone else's myriad hammer marks stage. You go, guy!

Helmet parts done purely by the hammer spend a very long middle phase in a condition of lumps and cellulite before the pretty suddenly starts to happen very late in the game -- keep pounding.

Yea, I think just about every poject has to fight through the abomination stage where you wonder if it would be better left in a heap to rust away . . .

Looking good Ironbadger. Looks like there's light at the end of the tunnel!
