An overwhelming desire to hit your opponent hard enough to make them blow snot bubbles.
The fortitude to stand and receive blows of equal force.
The ability to do both with style and grace.
And friends in livery is no bad thing.

And "an income".
Sorry, had to continue the trend there.
Having one, I have to admit that a horse is a significant investment that most people will choose to delay. It really is part of the correct interpretation though.

I also recommend some semblance of physical fitness. Armor is heavy.

Hi,
- The proper body shape (BMI of 20-22 helps
)
- Sense for the right aesthetics
- Proper shaping, sizing and general fit (goes together with the two above)
Cheers,
Jan

Oh yeah, the cotehardie remind me of this. Proper split hose. Too many people walk around with 13th century hose which together with the short 14th century style cotehardies result in the diaper look.

Ick. Draw the line at 14c. armor, because the costume is totally absurd.

I always thought that late 14th c. costume was really cool. Close fitting, nice round body form, long enough to cover up your underwear....Skutai wrote:Ick. Draw the line at 14c. armor, because the costume is totally absurd.
Completely reasonable.
YMMV

I think it's pretty classy myself!
Re: Essentials for 14th cent kit
YES! Bothers me too for late 14th century portrayals.Oh yeah, the cotehardie remind me of this. Proper split hose. Too many people walk around with 13th century hose which together with the short 14th century style cotehardies result in the diaper look.
I wear separate hose with a longer tunic or cotehardie for my mid-14th century outfit. Everything starts to get that fitted look but not yet shortened enough to show braies.
The problem when many people start researching the 14th century that it's 100 years long. You can't just wear a "14th Century" kit. The style should be cohesive.

Re: Essentials for 14th cent kit
It does depend on when in the 14th century you are talking about. It seems to me that the 14C is when change begins to take on speed. As to silly fashions, I confess that I find 15C men's fashion pretty silly. But some people dig it.
