Haubergeon with dome riveted 9mm alternating flat rings

Post by Therion »

I've just started listing/offering maille on my site. The hauburgeon pictured here is one that I intended for my own use, but am selling to pay medical bills.

Alternating riveted and solid rings, 60" chest (fits up to/about 54" as measured *over* arming clothes and gambeson, although you may want to snip a few more links away from the neck opening), 35" from shoulder to hem.

Unworn, and it has been de-greased and de-rusted and sealed with acrylic.

update at 1:20 pm - the special sale price pre-cleaned hauburgeon pictured above has been sold, but take heart, this one originally intended for my use is/was the first of many different hauberks and hauburgeons to be listed on my site; and I'll be offering them in both oiled and cleaned up versions (although I'm going to have to be really really nice to my lady to get her to help me clean them while my arm is still in a sling)

Here's the listing for this style:

Yes, I ship stuff to Canada all of the time.

Unfortunately, boxed up for shipping the package weighs 22 lbs, which is just over the 20 lbs limit for fixed rate to Canada :(

Fixed-rate would have been $40, the USPS shipping calculators say that the extra two pounds bumps the cost to $72.96 for Priority Mail.

That is fairly normal operating procedure for us. Still cheaper than UPS or FEDex.

I have a buddy in NY who will take delivery for me. I'll get it shipped there, I'll PM you the details.

Take a pic. You should look funny being that it is 60".

Hal, that's a nice price on those! Can you walk us through the cleaning and sealing procedures, please?

Glad to share, especially since I gleaned the technique by searching through a lot of archive discussions.

Basically, you need really big zip-lock baggies, and three subsequent bathings in Kaboom Shower Tub & Tile Cleaner (to remove the old oils and gunk), Evapo-Rust (to even out the finish), and Pledge Floor Care Tile & Vinyl Floor Finish (for long term protection).

(that last one sounded weird to me, but it was a Forth Armory recommendation and I'm glad to take the advice of a man who has worked with a lot more oily maille than most of us will ever see in their lives! :))

How large are the zip lock bags and where do you get them?

Be my guest. I figure it is one of the perks of being a dropbox for all of us. Especially when you get some thing really sexy like the Armstreet etched stuff.

I do want a picture. Like Christophe says, it should look pretty funny considering how big it is.

i've heard that a dryer works wonders for mail. not so much for the dryer but thats why we use laundrymats
A gerbil on PCP is of tactical advantage if you know how to use it right.

I just relayed the dryer bit to a friend.

He offered these caveats:

"IF you decide foolishly, (that is HIS word, not mine) to a home dryer, strap the door shut."
"IF you use a laundromat, then use one you don't like in case you get banned for breaking the dryer."

ReStore (Habitat for Humanity), Goodwill, Salvation Army, Craigslist, Rescue Mission all seem to have "junker" (used) dryers that you could get just for drying mail.

and finally:

Let the mail cool completely or use really thick gloves when removing it from any dryer. I jokingly asked if he used mail gloves to remove the chain.... no reply as yet.

Hope that helps!

John
