Looking for cheap 15th hose

Post by Kilian_the_warlike »

Hey folks!

Really need to bulk up my 15th century wardrobe, and damn if i didn't choose one of the priciest periods to dress in. I Have doublets, shirts etc, but I am severely lacking on proper legware aside from a few pairs of GDFB pants.

I'm looking for low(ish) cost or gently used 15thC split or joined hose in linen, cotton or wool that would fit a roughly 40 waist and 32 inseam. I'd prefer actual pointed hose rather than modern tights.

Thanks a bunch!

I have an unfinished pair of what would have been joined hose (but I didn't get the butt quite right) hose that could possibly work as split hose. They're done in blue wool flannel with a white linen lining. They're fitted to me, so they may not fit you, but if you're coming down to Crown Tourney I could bring them for you to try on. That might motivate me to finish up the last seam, and then they'd just need eyelets for pointings.

Thanks, but these are not what I am looking for. These are cotton/lycra blend, with an elastic waistband. Basically dancing tights with a codpiece.

They've got the right period, and the right kind of clothing. Just not under $100.

If you find any let me know.

15th century hose is never cheap and takes effort to make. If you don't want to spend the dosh, you are going to be stuck in dancing tights.

Both my sets of 15th century joined hosen are from Historic Enterprises, and I'm glad I spent the extra money.

Kilian, where in Atlantia are you? The Lord Grey's Retinue folks in northern Atlantia might be able to help you make or find 15th-century joined hose. (James B. and Charlotte belong, for example.) Also, I think Reconstructing History has a pattern for 15th-century hose if you can find someone to make them for you.

I have 2 or three pair from HE and one from a guy in Poland.
The set from Poland was cheaper and well made but did not fit well.

Seeing as how most people running a business like being paid for their time, and making hosen is often a time-consuming process, you're not very likely to find accurate, well-fitted hosen for the price you'd find dancing tights.
Buying off the rack is sometimes cheaper, but then your hosen might not fit you like they should, ruining the line of your legs.

My suggestion is, make your own.

I used James B.'s tutorial (above), and it really wasn't difficult.

Upside to this is, you now have a custom-made pattern that you can use to make multiple pairs for yourself.

As are my good ones, but I really want to find something that I won't worry about while I do camp chores.

Tibbie: I'm in Tirydon (historic triangle)

I have two people who could make me some, but they are both way backlogged on both clothing for me, and for themselves. I've looked into commissioning other folks, but they still run $90+. If I can find used or cheap, i'd be in hog heaven!
