I find it disturbing that he's implying you can use this helm for SCA combat. The mail over the face of the helm is just plain goofy.

OK, I was done until I saw this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=733443266

Did you now that the spangen was derived from the Roman bascinet?! Man, I learn something new every day.

Jeez, I do not need history books! All I have to do was go on E-bay!

I will probably be banned from E-bay for my comments to this clown, but it was worth it.

The sad thing is that the items display a certain amount of skill in metal working... but the designs and inaccurate historical references are all SOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!

That spangenhelm looks alot like some of the other 16-18ga "sca legal" helms that sell every week on Ebay, as seen here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1785300849
Chances are these are not high crafstmanship, but mass produced. And going from this guys great historical inaccuacies, it just makes it worse. Never in my most drunken stupor would I buy something offa ebay from someone with that bad of history knowledge. At least he got the "16 guage is thicker than 18guage" right. Partial credit Image

WTF!?! this is , well, . . . uh.
I'm stunned, either by the "Sliders" quality "research", or simply by the sheer temerity of the guy.

Servus!

Although it's right up there with the "pigs in space" helmet, it does not say that the helm is combat legal only this:

This helmet comforms to the Society for Creative Anachronism's regulations for thickness.

I just wish that these knuckleheads would stop using the SCA as a selling point or measurment guage to peddle their unresearched wares.

I contest the classification of "pigs" when referring to the helmet whose photo is posted above. The pointed nose depicted in relief on the front "faceplate" is much more of a cat shape. Plus, the cat-like eyes do not say "pig." If anything, this is "Garfield's Diving Helmet." In the future, I hope you will see fit to refer to is as such! Image

Unfortunately, it was up on ebay, and someone actually bought it!

I think it should be entered in the "ugliest helm" contest on the armour design and construction board Image

As to the one Halfdan posted the link to, do you get the impression of one wearing that at Agincourt lifting the maille enough to to ask, "Could you direct me to where the English longbowmen are shooting at?"

Although, if the reserve wasn't too low, you could cut the maille off, use it for something, and put....a BARGRILL on the front for a child's helm! Yea, that's it! Image

I still have a coif I bought a few years back off one of the Archive's old auctions that is WAY WAy Way to small for me or just about any adults..brass I think it's made of..need to find the thing sometime.

One more myself, and I'll move on to another topic.. I must give the person credit for having a return policy and seems fairly up-front on the modern-day business side.

In defence of Bruce, ie King'sLance. I must say firstly that , yes, I was stupid enough to buy one of his helms. Some of you may recal the pictures I posted on this board trying to unload, er share the wealth, as it were. His (King'sLance) problem is that his helms are made in India and there, apparantly, having your nose compressed to the point of necessitating surgical removal would actually add to the dinner table.

wheres the defence ?

oh yeah.

a. I got one of his "Roman Centurian" helms. In order to make it "try" to fit in the front I cut off the nasal, which was INSIDE the bargrill. ----- my kudos to the lad, as he paid for UPS to pick it up and refunded my dinero even before they sent it back his way.

b. I bought one of his brass accented leather breastplates, and since I dont consider leather shoestrings adequate strapping, I've been getting it into shape. They took a very thick piece of leather, wet formed it, then added a layer of suede thickness to it. Not bad at all (CONSIDERING IT'S FROM INDIA LIKE ALL HIS STUFF). dUNNO if it'll beat the body bracelt that I'm a waitin for from Thorfina and friends, but in a few months I should have it strapped and Duke Stephan here in Ardenroe should be able to bounce a couple of uncalled blows upon it lol

PSSSSSS Speaking of India -------- I just bought an imported hauberk form Mark CArraway (the dude on Ebay selling berks and coifs for $199 I explained that I didn't need the coif ( I have three plus an aventail) We arranged a lessor price for the shirt, and yes it hangs below my knee cops, and hell yeah I had to cut the stinkin full length sleeves off.

hell of a buy for 155 $

few bitches he quoted it as being 14 gauge / 3/8s tru 16 gauge closer to 7/16s. Hell it made it through last fighter practice, so it's still not a bad deal for a big ass hauberk. VERY shiny galvy. I fought in it with my 17 gauge blackened byrnie over it..... I blame my heavy heater for my lack of success. Not two layers of chainmail. OH and a dog ate my homework
I got my makita planer workin on myshield to take a few pounds off, not as we speak, but I'm thinking of it as we speak so sue me.
