Out of curiosity, which of the base material and plating choices would make for the best starting point to have the nails gilded in the end? Yes, I'm (kinda) serious.

Brass is a copper based alloy, so both should work fine. I think that brass would be better because the color is closer so damage wouldn't be as noticeable.

Tom B. has offered to handle nails orders under 10 pounds. I think that it will be a few more weeks until I have the price and other details defined.

I'm still waiting to get prices from D.B. Gurney. I'll call him next week. I'm thinking of going with 10 gauge nails to get a larger head and because D.B. Gurney already has a machine setup to cut 10 gauge hob nails with a groved head. 10 gauge nails would need a larger hole than 1/8". How do people feel about this?

What I'm thinking for doing is trying to put together a limited group order of 20 gauge hardened 301 stainless steel plate sets after I verify a laser cut prototype run in 20ga mild steel. The 1st group order would ONLY be for plates sets of the SAME SIZE as my 2nd prototype COP (the all red COP). That COP as shown has 950 nails spaced 1/2" apart, the plate sets would have 376 nails spaced 1.5" apart. I think that 376 nails is more reasonable if you are to have any hope of being able to recover a plate sets when the COP shell wears out.

The plate sets are for a COP that fits a person 5'8" / 173cm to 6'0" / 183cm tall and weighs 170 pounds / 77Kg to 220 pounds / 100Kg.

I'm interested pending pricing - Nice of Tom to handle the "small" orders. If folks in the pacific Northwest are interested in "small" orders drop me a PM, I can probably be the accumulator on this coast.

I'd be interested in the COP#1, but you'd need to be about a foot taller ;) I'm looking forward to your next brigandine!

If you think you could ship some of the brass to scotland, I'd be tempted by 2-3kilos

If I can get at least 10 people together to order plate sets, then the price would be around $300 + shipping per set. All the plates except for the waist plates would be 20ga full hard 301 stainless steel. The waist plates would be 18ga. 304 stainless steel. Please note that 20ga full hard stainless steel is not easy to shape and requires steel forms and a low dome dishing hammer. The hammer can be made by ginding a dome on the flat face of the 36oz. cross peen "blacksmith's" hammer sold at HomeDepot. You will also need to cross peen the waist plate into a V cross section.

My current plan is to get 10ga. brass nails that will work better for COPs. I'm still waiting for D.B. Gurney to decide on a price.

Hi Craig,

Any update on the brig nails pricing? Am planning to do a spring steel corrazine and would love to use these nails if possible.

Looking forward to your reply.

D.B. Gurney finally gave me a price quote. To make this work I'd have to buy at least 200 pounds of 11ga. brass x 1/2" long nails. The price for unplated brass nails is $35 per pound. There are around 400 nails per pound. My plan would be to get 100 pounds of the brass nails tin plated. I'm going to guess the the price would be around $40 per pound for the tin plated brass nails.

So, at this point I need to know who's in at those prices.

What is the head pattern for these - simple domed head, flat head or rosette?

A picture would be appreciated if available.

Thanks Tom, I have some from the previous order. There was discussion on the head style in this thread, but I didn't find anything definitive on what the head style would be.

Apologies in advance if I'm just blind today.

Craig,

Sign me up for a order of 10 pounds. When do you need to get the final order in? Since these group orders do not happen frequently I am considering ordering slightly more, either 15 or 20 pounds.

Almost 9¢ per nail. I really want to pick up 10 lbs to support the project but if Liz catches me spending that sort of money after I chided her about her purchases I'd be building a dog-house to sleep in. If I DON'T buy then I'll be kicking myself next year when I can't get them.

Put me in for 5lbs / $175. I'll circulate the word to a few people I know not on the AA as well. If we are going to miss the total by only a few pounds i might stretch for more but I have to do my taxes first.

Thanks,

I'll commit to ten pounds of the brass. I will subdivide for any orders in eastern Canada, to keep shipping and brokerage down. I'll try to co-ordinate with Jeff J for ten pounds of the tinned steel nails he's sitting on, if any and get it all in one box.

71 pounds so far out of a 180 minimum order...That's only 40% so far. Come on people! This opportunity comes around like once every 2 DECADES. Miss it now and you might be retired from fighting by the time this happens again.

I'm in for 2# of the brass nails.

Whomever I am supposed to pay, pm me with a USPS address and total (including shipping). I don't do paypal or credit cards over the net

An alternative would be me getting the money to Tom B and using the 'SCA mail' to get it delivered. Either is OK with me.
