Good camcorder for sca fighting

Post by Syrfinn »

Hi folks, in the market to get a new camcorder, specially one that can take some good high speed shots, for training purposes for myself and others.

What are some folks out there using and suggestions.

It needs to be able to be put on a tripod, since I will be filming my fights also, and will normally not have anyone to shoot while I am fighting.

Thanks

Can attach to a tripod.

Can you point us to some examples of videos, perhaps on youtube or some other service?

I use the film function on my Canon Rebel. Not a great option for video. Often out of focus, and difficult for non-camera trained people to operate without a hassel. ALSO the silly thing stops taking video after 10 minutes or so, unless someone watches it and presses a button.

If I didn't use it for pictures it would be more of an issue.

i am a professional camera operator (stedicam). i use two flip video cameras on tripods. they shoot hd no tape, have usb port to down load directly to your pc or mac . comes with pretty good software for editing and very cheap. two cameras work the best and at less than $100 each fantastic for training. they are about the size of a cellphone and you can get a wide angle attachment for the lens for little $. they have different models that have different recording times and very simple to operate. :)

cheers

Thanks for the idea Nicholas. Was thinking of Flip, but wasnt sure if you could put them on tripods. And like you said, 2 of them, is about the price of a normal good camcorder. Will need to look at their specs, dont remember them having high speed capabilities.

I loved watching Duke Gaston's vids on Youtube back in 2011, where he was showing fights and using high speed, to show the different angles off and on, while filming fights of Duke Balder. Which is why I am wanting to have the high speed option, to better see some shots and how they are landing.

its not full 1080p ... but when i bought the camera it was half the price of a comparable 1080p camera. It also has enough memory and battery power to last most of a saturday recording vids of fighting.

I have a Panasonic HDC-SD90, which is a couple years old at this point. Not sure what the newer version is.

It shoots 1080p/60fps, and I've been very happy with it.

My YouTube channel is http://www.youtube.com/pitrei

Rather a lot of the video on there is shot in an alley at night with portable lights reflecting off the walls, but if you look farther down in the playlists there is some daylight stuff. I converted a few videos to partial slow motion with YouTube's editor.
