Auction: Oriental Helm by Thorbrandr Olafsson

Post by Eirik »

I'm selling this helm for a friend, Baron Ketsu Toichi. He says it was made circa 1988 by then squire Thorbrandr Olafsson. No idea what gauge steel, but it's in good condition for it's age. It's obviously been used, but the helm has great lines, to my eye. I can get some better pics when the sun comes out. If the sun comes out ....

The helm has a 28.5" Outside diameter and is 17" from the bottom of the grill to the top center of the helm. It has D rings for a chin strap if you do not care for the rope-strap it has now. It is a bit loose on my 24.5" head as padded... but then I would not fight in it as padded, either :).

I'll start the bidding at $100, buyer pays shipping from 37203. The auction will run until Saturday night between 6:30 and 7:00 CDT.

I prefer PayPal. Good Luck!!

That's cool. I haven't seen many helms from my Knight for sale. They are usually held onto. ;)

Interesting timing and even more interesting to find out who made it. I recently finished this http://www.flickr.com/photos/peele_robert/8937833486/ Would be great to get my Grand Knight's old helm and
finish off my suit. I bid $150.00

Wait, you know Baron Ketsu Toichi formerly of Black Diamond Atlantia?

If it is him, the autocrat for Icecastle wants to get ahold of him.

I'll PM you my email address. I would very much appreciate it if you can get him in touch with us. That is, if it is the same guy.

He may not remember me, tell him I was Baron after Liam. He'll remember Liam.

Woww!!! That was one of the first helms I ever fought in when I was a young pup. It was also one of the most comfortable. Don't let the padding worry you. When the mempo is tied snugly to your chin the suspension system won't let the helm get close to your head. Even in Atlantia. I'm sorely tempted to bid on it just for old times sake. Please tell Baron Toiichi that Wulfbrand, a former Black Diamonder, sends very warm greetings.

Yours,
Wulfbrand

Should be 14 ga construction for the bowl with 16 ga shokoro. I made that back in '86. It will fit a good size head.

Thank you sir!

I have linked this thread to Baron Toichi so that he might read your posts. I'm sure he could use a warm fuzzy :)

Tatsuo has top bid at $160. And I did let the good Baron smite me in the helm with a stout cardboard tube. It was painless. I LOVE this helm.

I've got a commission going on a kabuto, or I would bid.
I did place a link to this on Tousando, as someone there may be interested.

While reading through this forum I realized how old this helmet is (being older then i am) I was wondering if anyone could shed some light and history on this helmet like who wore and who those people are/were. Being a Japanese persona I like to know the "ancestry" of things and it seems I definitely found a piece with a history. If anyone could do this that would be great!

Baron Toiichi graciously let me use that helm when I first started fighting way back in 1990. He also graciously sold me the rest of his armor for a bargain basement price just to get a poor, enthusiastic college kid on the field. I used that helm until I won my own in a novice tourney in 1991. It is one of the best and most comfortable helms I have ever worn, and I am glad to see it going to another good home.

All the best,
