Looking for Tyrrhenian Sea in a period source

Post by Cisco »

Hey guys, I'm looking for a period source that shows (or describes) the islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. That's the sea off the NW Italian coast that contains the Isle of Elba. Anyone know of any sources? I've tried historical nautical maps but nothing yet, hoping someone else's search-fu is better than mine.

You probably need to express better what it is you are actually trying to know. The Tyrrhenian Sea is south of Elba so do you mean it or the Ligurian Sea that lies to the north of Elba.
So narrowing it down to what about the Sea or particular islands might be of use or what time period.
This book might be a place to start.

Figure 14, Ortelius 1570 is perhaps the best download for your purposes, cropped below.

I looked after a PM exchange, and we seem to be fortunate in having a digital copy of the 1570 Theatrum orbis terrarum in the Library of Congress.

The zoom feature allows for quite detailed views, with every named island or town being clearly readable. This picture at zoom level 4 of 5.

After speaking a bit with Ernst I managed to find the same thing at the LoC. I also found a copy of the Terrarum and bought it. And then, of course, realized that it's in German.

So I'm going to have an awesome coffee table book of maps. In German. :)
