Greetings
Does anybody have pics/patterns/references for a nice period sheath and hanger system for a norse longseax that they would care to share? Blade is approx. 18"long and handle is approx. 6" long.''
Thank you,
Grimr

I assume you're already familliar with Jeroen Zuiderwijk and Petr Florianek's research on the subject over at don fogg's bladesmith forums?
Also for hanging methods, the illustration in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek WLB Cod.bibl.fol.23 Stuttgart Psalter folio5 verso gives more than a few hints of what was conventional for long seaxes:

and the surviving examples (you'll see them in the dfogg bladesmiths forum threads of course)

(those two images supplied by Petr Florianek and Peter Johnsson respectively)
for general design details, you could also look at "Scabbards and Sheaths from Viking and Medieval Dublin" by Esther Cameron for a few ideas of methods?

Something like this, you mean?
I used ref pics from English viking era re-enactors at living history events.
Those were the best refs I had available when I made this one.

This is how I have done it.
The blade is 15.5" and the handle just below 5"
