The Longship Company will be hosting some of our friends from Canada and New England starting Friday night, October 25, through Sunday, October 27.
Several of you may have met Darrell Markewitz from Wareham Forge ( http://warehamforgeblog.blogspot.com/ ) over the years. He will be coming down to Oakley (on a return leg to Canada from some educational seminars further south) to go out on the longship (and/or the faering) over the weekend. We are mostly looking for experienced hands for the ship; but if you don't want to go viking with us (and who wouldn't want to go viking?) and still want to come and hang out after hours, and help host as needed, you would most certainly be welcomed. Also, Neil Peterson, who leads the Forward Into the Past symposia Waterloo, ON ( http://www.fitp.ca/ ), and is quite the expert at Viking Age bead production, will be sailing with us.
In addition to our Canadian friends, we will also be joined by the folks from Hurstwic ( http://www.hurstwic.org/ ), who are offering demonstrations of their fighting techniques, while we try not to drown them on the voyages.
Medieval clothing is optional, with the main emphasis being practicality and survivability since these will be more training and experimental archeology voyages than “photo” voyages. Camping is available on site, and we will also have a portable toilet. We have also arranged for the church hall for sleeping quarters if the weather takes a bad turn. Space may be limited, but I will have updates later in the week and we will do our best to accommodate our guests, our regular crew, and any volunteers.
If you have any questions, please contact us.

Dude, I wish I'd known earlier. Is this the last sailing of the year?

No; the last trip is when we haul her out (per our tradition) on December 7th. I expect at least two more voyages in November.Halfdan wrote:Dude, I wish I'd known earlier. Is this the last sailing of the year?
http://longshipco.org/upcoming.html The lower Potomac and Chesapeake are usually ice-free well into December.
