Valsgarde 6 top

Post by Halvgrimr »

greets all

some of you may know that i am working on a new Valsgarde 6 helmet.

here are the very first pics i have of this project:

i am just about finished with the Mark 1 version and am just not happy with 'the look' so i was wondering if when i finished it up anyone would be interested in just the top?

i will clean it up a bit and rivet all the pieces in but i am biting at the bit to get started on the Mark 2 version so i am not looking to put alot m ore work into it (like adding the occular, check and back plates)

i really dont have any idea what it might be worth so i am entertaining offers

in case anyone is wondering the metal gauges are as follows

the browband is 14 ga
the neck to nape band (ie the crest) is 12 ga
the two side bands are also 12 ga
the small Y's and the star shapes are 14 ga
the big Y's are 12 ga

let me know if you are interested

btw some of the pieces appear crooked in the photos, this is mainly due to the bolts i have holding it together so far being smaller that the holes punched, so the pieces have a bit of play in them when assembled this way, the proper rivits should correct this

Are you going to "SCAify" it? How about just the templates?

Very nice work. I'm jealous Image

I don't know how easy it was for you to cut out all those small pieces and fit them into the helm, but I wouldn't price the helm top for anything under $100 because of the work involved in putting it all together.

--well i have plates i got from Raymonds Quite Press for this but that would drive the price up as they dont come cheap Image

for those wondering i have the following plates from Raymonds (which can be seen here http://www.nmia.com/~rqpltd/Helm_Plaques.html) :

1 PV03 ($7 each)
1 PV05 ($7 each)
1 PV08 ($7 each)
1 PV09 ($6 each)
1 PV10 ($7 each)
1 PV02 ($7 each)
1 PV04 ($7 each)
3 PV07 ($5 each)

from what i can tell in my research the only plaque he sells that would be right for the V6 helm would be the PV17.

the pressblechs on the browband, neck to nape band, the side bands and the ocular are very similar to it, but as far as i can tell no pressblechs with the 'man images' were on this helm

Halvgrim,
I was wondering if you could scan your pattern for me? I would like to compare it to mine and I am curious to see how close our interpretations are. If no one else wants the top, I might take it, unrivited, if you will dish the remaining parts.
What changes are you making on the mark 2? To my eye, the only thing that is off is the width of your bands. Mine are 1.5 " wide, yours look a bit wider. Of course, this is all artistic interpretation based on the picture from the Tweadle book!

again, i need to consult with Master Trsitram about the pattern issue

and yes its the band width (and the use of 12ga on some parts) that make me personally unhappy with this version, the next version will be all 14 ga with 12 Y's (the bigs ones) and narrower bands.

it is a very solid helmet but by the time i add all the extras i want ('period liner, plaques, custom cast crest/eyebrows/occulars, custom bargrill, hidden checkplates/backplate, and a Forth camail) it would be ungodly heavy IMO.

dont get me wrong, it will make a fine base helmet but this isnt a helm you want to start adding all the "extra's" to!

though the Tweedle book does give some info on this helm, most of my info comes from the Valsgarde 6 site report, its a wonderful thing to own Image

Halvgrimr,

Thanks for putting the pattern online. My friend and I were just discussing the merits of doing this one versus a modified Ultuna just before you made you initial post.

You mention another source that you used to get the pattern other than Tweedle. Where might I be able to get this information?

i have seen them for sale on places like abebooks.com and a few other oop book services but i work for a university that has an emphasis on archeaology, as a result i have access to an amazing library full of hard to get/find books on what seems like an almost never ending number of topics.

Since this thread was from May of 2003 I will have to search for the pics.
I dont think I ever got to posting the patterns.

I will look for both and update this thread when I find them

First off, Halvgrimr, your photos didn't post here. I would be very much interested in seeing them.

Second. I have a zerox copy of Valsgarde 6. Drop me a line (privately) and I'll mail you a copy. Just keep reminding me to do so.

Halv,

I'm a bit confused.... what exactly do you need? I've got a scanned copy of Valsgarde 6 if that's what you're after. Let me know if it's something else and I'll see what's lurking on my hard drive.

Hey Kian

I built a Vals6 repro sometime ago (well I helped build is more accurate) and posted some pics in this thread.

I have since removed the pics from where they were and lost the originals.

I am hoping someone saved them as armour porn and can send me copies.
