Does anyone else do Jack Chains?

Post by Vladimir »

I've seen the GDFB ones and the Kult of Athena.

It seems that those are the only types out there. Any others?

Vlad, the GDFB ones are actually pretty good. If those don't strike your fancy, you and I could easily make a set for you.

I will be. Putting together a new 15th cent. rig and I will be using Jack Chains for aesthetics.

I've been wanting to make some as well, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Edit.. looking at the KoA and GDfB versions these are a bit simpler than I remembered. If anyone can provide a link to pics of an extant historical pair or detail from historical artworks that they like I'll bang out a set or two this week. I'd probably be looking for around $75 for 16 gauge (its what i have, i could see about getting some 14 gauge, but only of i definitely have a sale) mild steel. Also, I don't currently have a good way to buff steel to a near-mirror polish so they won't be quite as shiny as the commercially made ones.

It would be nice to sell something to pay for some of the tools I've been buying lately.

Woodwose, GDFB does two kinds, the 1420's dish ones, and the 1460s+ shaped ones. These are $130ish, but damn, if I didnt have my sexy gothic couters...

Therion shoes the GDFB pair and the historic example it is based on.

I was hoping to have at least one prototype finished up by now, but have been kept pretty busy lately with shoveling snow from the storm the other night, thawing frozen pipes, troubleshooting a troublesome water heater and washing machine.

I have elbows and shoulders done for a pair similar to the kult of Athena ones, and now scrounging up some round stock for the rings.

Kilian, when I refill my propane and clear up my backlog of forging projects I'll try making a set with those Gothic style couters... only similar things I've made were somewhat similar couters welded up from three pieces, and very crude pair for some almain splints; but those were before I had a forge or had done much with hot shaping for armor pieces. Since the shaping on the Gothic couters is a lot more complicated than on the simple lightly dished ones on the other jack chains I would have to ask a higher price, but don't want to quote a price until I get one at least somewhat finished.

Don't worry about me, I just had to shell out $250 to replace the battery in my car.

Whoever heard of a battery you can't see (well barely) that you have to jack up the car, remove the front right wheel, and pull the battery out through the wheel-well?
The engineer who came up with that idea must have been drunk.

Sorry about the subject change.

Wasn't the engineer. It was the corporate guys who realize they make more profit in the 'service' bays than on sales.

The same engineer that puts a plastic manifold over the entire engine compartment so you can't get in to replace plugs, wires, etc.

I was wondering if anybody knows if the elbows on the GDFB jack chains are SCA legal?

They cover the joint pretty well...not sure why the elbow portion would not be legal...

Unless I'm seeing things wrong on the ones with the rondel style elbow piece - the elbows only cover the outside (side of the joint away from the body) of the elbow and don't really go much past or around the point of the elbow. I would probably try to use them with hidden modern sports pads with a hard plastic elbow that provides a bit more coverage to the inside (body side) of the elbow.

Yeah, I don't think the rondell style are SCA Heavy list legal.

The full elbows probably are. I don't know the guage of metal, but the look heavy enough to pass.

Doesn't matter to me because I wasn't planning on using them for Heavy lists anyway. Now with 2 car repairs in a row and the holidays and the drive down to Florida to visit family I'm not going to be buying a set any time soon. :(

The 1460's full elbow jack chains I handled were just fine for SCA heavy, but like most GDFB armor, they will rust if you look at them funny.

Here are my first couple sets:

I ended up having to increase the price I originally quoted because I needed to fire up the forge to make the rings.
