Its very pretty with a lot of nice brass work and etchings but it lacks a lot of shaping in the knuckle area

seconded about the knuckles. In your site pic with the first closed it looks like a gap is forming, and I certainly wouldn't want to punch anyone with those on due to that.

On the covered ones - nice! Much closer to the "typical" aesthetic; the etching on the polished ones was nicely executed but (please forgive and correct me if I'm wrong) the gauntlets predate that decoration technique by a few hundred years, and the pattern seems. . . off. . . stylistically for the period. I know that engraving vs. etching is really splitting hairs, but what we're looking at here are representative of far higher station than munitions grade work.

The knuckles on both examples still seem under formed, a little chunky. Unless the fingers on these are built as grounding SCA-style, then please disregard.

Last, am i missing it in the photos, but is the knuckle rider plate missing? Again, not saying it is an absolute, but having it would improve the function of the gauntlets as protection and I think would be more in line construction-wise with the level of embellishment you have presented here.



That aside, I've said privately before that I don't think I know of another shop on a production scale doing the level and quality of etching work your shop is doing. I really think that if you spent some time studying 16th century examples to get the decorative patterns down stylistically, and applied same to quality 16th century armor pieces, that you would really have the attention of very late period living history folks.

We accept any reasonable criticism and professional opinion. That's really matters and important for us.
I have to say you are way right.
Gauntlets design is actually earlier then most of the etched historical pieces though there are some this period museum pieces (not gauntlets) which has etched patterns. So we definitely can't insist this design is true to period but it might. We just love "Hourglass" finger-gauntlets and wanted to combine them with etched decorations. For period maniacs we have plain steel ones.

We made leather-covered ones at same time to stainless so before the discussion about knuckles. These has better knuckles but we already discussed how we can improve knuckles on both so I'm really thankful for this suggestion and we will do that.

Mike, Jon has a great eye and is extremely knowledgeable on 14th century and up armour particulars. Jon was at my house last week and we were discussing the new armour and he had so many good points that I wanted to make sure that he passed them on so that I didn't leave any out.

Jon understands that you are using the etching to give earlier pieces, that usually didn't have such decoration, an extremely cool "upgrade" that will be popular with SCA and even Buhurt fighters. We were discussing this last night and he made a good point that you have the inside track on being able to provide quality historically-accurate armour for those that need/want that level of authenticity while still being able to provide dead sexy "sport" armour at extremely reasonable prices.
