Traveling Armourer

Post by Tableau »

Hey guys,

In keeping with my life goal of becoming a homeless hippy, I have recently moved into a van and began a new and exciting rubber trampin' life. Unfortunately for my armour practice, this means I no longer have a shop. And I thought I worked slowly when I had a shop! Well I don't want to stop my armour education all-together, so I've piled as much of my armouring equipment as is practical into the van in the hopes that I can find some little corners of the world to pound out the occasional piece, here and there. In addition to hanging out with friends who have garages, I though I might be able to connect with either armourers who are interested in having an apprentice-for-a-day or even beginners who have a space to work and an interest in learning.

As I said, I have some pretty basic armouring equipment. I've got a bucket of hammers, all my stakes, a big stump with a vice that I use as a stake holder and as a vice, a portable dishing stump and a 110v wire welder. I've pretty much brought all my tools except my large dishing stumps and my forges and torches. As I said, if anyone is interested in learning and has a garage or some such appropriate space, I'd be willing to give free lessons on the basics. This would be good for me to keep up my armour habit and hone my abilities while also spreading my love of the craft.

It's wonderful to be able to learn armour making off the internet, but I'm sure it would be pretty helpful to learn first hand, as well.

Right now, we're in Guelph, Ontario visiting my brother. We will be here for the week, then heading to quebec for a family event. If anyone in Guelph wants to meet up, send me a message.

Next we'll be in Montreal for a couple of weeks starting on Feb. 23. After that, our plans are less defined. We will probably head to NYC (Gotta go see the MET!), then head south to nowhere really specific. We'll need to be back in Ontario by the beginning of May for a couple months of work, then we're headed west across Canada, and then probably down the west coast of the united states.

Anyone generally on that route wants to meet up, let me know and we'll try to make some plans. My lovely girlfriend is living with me in this van, so all potential plans must be approved by her. She patiently and generously puts up with my armour habit, but we have to do stuff that she likes too.

Here is a gallery of things that I have made in my life:

If you make it all the way to Alaska by chance let me know. I'll set aside a bottle of mead for you two.

Hmm. Well I'm not ruling it out. We were thinking of heading to Yukon at some point so we might not be far off.
