For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Unless Zoombang has gone down in price (dramatically), it's not that much more. And after watching the videos, it looks like it might function better. Just wanted to see if it had been evaluated for use.

if I get the chance I will get a set and evaluate it. It looks interesting to say the least.

My Zoombang Shirt was 175, one of those shirts is 394. (I'm comparing the jacket, it has similar coverage)

I love the idea of more products like this but woah that is some coin. It would be cool for someone (blackbow  ) to compare the two.

I could see that gear becoming popular with those HEMA practitioners who insist on a modern appearance.

Here is an interesting article discussing archaeological finds of splint armors around your time period - written by a Varangian reenactor, but discusses other areas. There's an excellent bibliography for further research.

Well, Swete, I don't credit the no-gambeson, just-mail-over-shirt idea for the Dark and Viking Ages. Too anti-sensible, and flies in the face of what somebody who's got a lot of linen and no mailshirt might work up. Our ancestors didn't exactly look on broken bones as great fun to have. The absence of evidence can't quite be read as evidence of absence here, when it would after all pass the sniff test.

I don't wear Zoombang either, for similar reasons.

Because, as I've said before, when you swing at me with a real sword, I'll put on real armor. When people stop throwing bullshit wrap shots because I can't punch their sword arm with my shield, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Lots of people use hidden plastic or leather or titanium/aluminium splints, a lot of which are modern potpourris of different designs, all of this to keep to a historical silhouette they like. Or it's because of heat or weight or clunkyness or cash. Zoombang is no different than other hidden anachronisms. Besides, we are not reenactors, we are SCAdians. I myself strive to get real armour because I like the entire thing about it and the idea behind it. However, barrel plastic coats of plate (which I must regretably get as a starter), hidden leather vests and aluminium legs are just as "bad" as zoombang and people like different things.
