WTB/T LOOKING for aluminum haubergeon

Post by Michael Spaulding »

Edit: In light of availability (or actual existence) of what I'm looking for, my updated wishlist is below. If you do happen to have a piece of damaged wedge riveted mild steel maille, please let me know. Otherwise, I am now in search of aluminum

Wishlist:
Aluminum
Dome riveted (Is there wedge riveted aluminum? I haven't seen any..)
Half to 3/4 length sleeves
Fits a 44 inch chest plus Gambeson

Here's my wishlist:

Mild Steel (Light rust at best, prefer no rust)
Wedge riveted, alternating solid ring preferred (exceptions made on good deals)
Mid length sleeves
Keeps an approximation of its original shape (I don't want to get 5 puzzle pieces I have to figure out)
Fits a 44 inch chest (I'm 43 inches, room to grow is a plus) plus Gambeson
Beat to hell (I'm looking for a really good deal here, so I want something that's worthless to you as it is)

The further away from my wishlist you are, the more of a deal I would need to be convinced to buy, but all offers are considered

Additionally, I'm offering all items in my etsy shop:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/calmb4tehpwn
at 200% value in trade!

That means if you value your beat up chainmaille shirt at $100, you can trade it in for TWO HUNDRED dollars worth of chainmaille jewelry!
Custom work can be done towards this trade as well valued at 150%, but all items in stock can be shipped in time for Valentine's day at a value of 200%!

Please let me know what you've got

With the advent of riveted maille most of the shirts getting moved around are due to folks upgrading to more historically appropriate styles - since riveted doesn't mothhole the way butted did.

You may not have much luck in this regard - are you just looking for a good price on a shirt? - there are some good bargains out there...

I've seen a couple on forums over the years. Riveted mail that belonged to medieval arms schools and avid purveyors of the sport that have ended up with tears and holes they're unable or unwilling to repair themselves.

To clarify, I am working on a costume piece. And being in the historical accurate side of the fence, I want to use actual armor in its creation. It's a character from Game of Thrones, and I am looking for riveted mail that is torn up, which I can then repair with new shiny rings, to give a contrasting "Obviously used and repaired" look to it.

I am already a bit over budget on this particular piece, so buying a new, or new condition haubergeon and damaging it myself, to repair it, would prove both too costly, and too time consuming for my current pool of resources (in both cash and available time to spend on the project).

I do really want high quality wedge riveted stuff that's been through hell and back. All these people doing chainmaille weapon tests end up with some seriously damaged haubergeons. Where do they all go?

I don't want something dome riveted that's losing all its rivets. Once repaired, I expect this piece to last me forever (as it shouldn't be seeing any additional combat), but high quality dome rivets are an option. As is butted maille, though that's a last resort, really. And ultimately, if someone has a rusted up butted mail shirt, and that's my only option for a cheap piece of maille, then I'll probably jump on it. But, by god, I really want good, quality mild steel, alternating solid ring wedge riveted that's just seen some heavy combat.

Thanks for the reply, Sasha

Depending on the quality, but up to $200 USD on a high quality, wedge riveted haubergeon that needs repairs.

Less on items that don't match my wishlist.

Hi,

Why not look at this? http://allbeststuff.com/c-medieval-chai ... k-Blackend

And go for a slightly less torn up look by going for this with rust stains everywhere?

Cheers,

Jan

Hey, Jan.

I'd like to avoid India sellers, as the quality control seems lacking at best. The quality.of the piece I receive comes down to luck, and I'm not up for playing that game.

Additionally, I can't find any wedge riveted stuff.on their site.
They may be a last ditch effort, if I can't get anything as I approach my deadline, but between shipping charges from out of country, and the luck factor, I'll save it for last resort

You are going to have a real problem avoiding Indian manufacture as it almost ALL comes from there - there are a few places in the Ukraine making maille (that seems nicely made and reasonably priced), and a very few people elsewhere (Europe, here in the States) but you are going to pay bespoke prices for that, since they tend to be one-man operations.

To clarify, I don't have anything against india manufacturers, but the eBay sellers (which all best stuff is) that I can't find solid and reliable reviews from concern me.

I've heard more stories about India pieces dropping dome rivets and tearing up gambesons than I've heard well articulated and we'll informed reviews, so jumping on an unendorsed $250 (after shipping) haubergeon new is a tough pill to swallow.

I and several friends have bought from all best stuff and we all speak for their quality of both product an d service. Your requirements for the mail you want is unrealistic. Nobody is going to give up a riveted shirt the same way they would a butted shirt. And as far as finding a riveted shirt that is busted to hell and back, well 8 years of sca and I still have not seen a riveted shirt in such shape as you describe.

And $250 for a shirt is cheap as dirt. Such pricing was unheard of a few years ago. $800 was the norm for a riveted shirt.
Edit: I am sorry if I am coming off as abrasive, but I am trying to express that your endevor needs to be illuminated with some compromise.

That's good to know.

$250 for a new condition haubergeon is cheap as dirt, I recognize that, which is one of the major reasons why I'm hesitant to jump at a dome riveted piece that's listed for less than $180 new. That's concerning to me.

It sounds like a wedge riveted haubergeon (Even rusted, if not damaged) isn't going to happen in my budget, which makes me think my best option here is focus on getting an aluminum haubergeon for my costuming purposes in the short term, and focus on building a budget for a more authentic piece.

So, does anyone have (a potentially damaged) aluminum dome riveted haubergeon? Round or Flat ring is fine. Prefer half - 3/4 sleeve, mid thigh length.

Icefalcon has them in stock. And mild, and ss, and titanium, and wedge, 9mm 6mm. Rtf etc etc. It will get shipped on Monday. Give him a ring and see if you can make a deal. (Doesn't hurt)
